CM vocoder HELP!
Hi all,
A friend of mine has gone off to india for a month and left me with a rather nice AKG condenser mic.
I thought i'd try a spot of vocoding. I have the CM vocoder but i can't get a peep out of it.
I've done a search and found one post about the cm vocoder but i just can't get it to work!
Could some one please tell me how to set this up so i can 'sing' in to the mic whilst 'playing' some chords on a VST.
This would be much appreciated!
Thanks in advance
Ash

Worked it out!.
Ok i think i got it!
Put the vocoder on channel one. Place an Audio clip in channel one. (in my case it was some of my crap singing!)
Set up a midi channel and bung a synth on it. Set the output to channel one and the drop down box below to CM Vocoder right.
The cm vocoder has 3 sliders on the right. pull the first two right down so as to only be able to hear the results of pressing a key on the synth. You should be able to see something that looks like the levels of a graphic eq bouncing about.
Not sure if this equates to Native Instruments stuff but it has to be somewhere along these lines?

Yes been trying to figure this one out myself for ages using 'Classic Vocoder' in the Reaktor 4 library. I'm desperate to use it but your tip for CM doesn't seem to work for me using Reaktor.

I use Reaktor's vocoder and one from Waves all the time - I haven't worked with the CM Vocoder, but it should be the same. Here's how I do it:
1) Start a new set. Make sure you have one Audio track and one MIDI track.
2) To get a live feed from your mic, select "Ext. In" from the first drop down box underneath "Audio From," then select the appropriate source in the second. Different sound cards have different numbers for different inputs. )NOTE - It might be common sense to some, but make sure you're using headphones at this point and not speakers/monitors - otherwise you might get some nasty feedback.) In order to get a live feed, switch the buttons under the "Monitor" from "Auto" to "In".
3) Drop your vocoder of choice in your audio track. Many are difficult to work with, but I've gotten very usable (and good sounding) results from both Waves Morphoder and Reaktor. For this I'll be using Reaktor 5's "Classic Vocoder" effect.
4) On your MIDI track, configure Ableton to accept MIDI signals from your keyboard. If you're not familiar with how to do this - it's covered in depth in the manual. If you're not playing live, create a blank MIDI clip by double clicking an empty scene under your MIDI track, then pencil in your notes of choice (as usual).
5) Now you need to route your MIDI signal to Reaktor so it knows which notes to play. In the first box underneath "MIDI To", select the audio track that contains your Reaktor effect. In this case, it's Track 1. The box underneath should default and grey out to Reaktor5 - in the (rare) case that you need more than one input plugins on the same track, you'd have to select it manually. If you're playing the MIDI part live, now you need to switch Monitor to "In".
6) Play away! It should all be working. Add effects as usual and have fun.
For those who need more help, I've uploaded two ALS files zipped up for your consumption - one is a live example, one's a non-live example (complete with a vocal sample and a midi clip). Keep in mind that you need Reaktor 5 for these files to work right off the bat, but you can also slip your own vocoder in and it rearrange if you don't have it.

Let me know if there are any other questions

ok this really is cool... but ... how did you manage to send Midi to the Audio channel?? I only ever have the option of sending Midi externally or to ReWire devices??!!

your not sending the midi your sending the audio from a vst on a midi channel. I think you could even do it with an audio clip (but I haven't tried that) You set the audio out from the channel with out the Vocoder to the channel with the vocoder then a drop down option will appear below that and you set that to the vocoder itself.nobbystylus wrote:ok this really is cool... but ... how did you manage to send Midi to the Audio channel??
