It is because of the essential sameness between XP and MCE that I didn't think it would be a big deal to buy a laptop with MCE; I figured it's just XP with some media stuff, right?? Then I got all paranoid because I talked to Presonus and they were not just making disclaimers about Media Center ...

Well, I went ahead and ordered the Presonus Firebox, with XP Media Edition still on my system. It arrived yesterday. I disabled all of the Media Edition features in msconfig and then loaded the Firebox drivers. Setup was a snap. I spent about an hour tweaking knobs, running my midi controller ...

I'm thinking of purchasing a digitial voice recorder to record some conversational voice stuff for a project I'm working on. Then I want to dump the data into live so I can edit it together.

My question is this: If the device records in WMA format, how easy is it to convert it to a .WAV ...

crap mp3's is a good possibility, some songs sounded better than others. sometimes though, the sound was a bit like what you hear when you're previewing samples on primesounds or whatever.

The reality is that Windows is a sieve, filled with holes. Microsoft leaves all these openings in its system. WU will save you from known problems but good luck with tomorrow's virus/worm/trojan/spyware/malware!
