So I reformatted by laptop, installed new version of the OS, and now I'm greeted with this lovely message that Ableton must individually "approve" my license to use the software. I spent nearly $800 on the Live8 suite with the APC40 package and this is the treatment I get? I have formatted this ...

Yeah, I agree with FadY there.

I'm also on OS X 10.5.8 / L8.0.5 and I get occasional random non-reproducible crashes, but nothing like as often as you mention.

Some ideas though:
- are you on the latest official version of Live 8, L8.0.5?
- tried Repairing Permissions on the Apple?
- also, try ...

You can check out something like Loopmasters for loops. Try the Puremagnetik site for Ableton specific stuff. My main issue with Live is stability. For a program thats supposed to be used live its horribly unstable and buggy. Close to unusable IMHO. I own Cubase and Reason and Im thinking I'll go ...

So I sank a grand into the Live8 Suite + the Akai MPC40 controller. Seems fun so far except for the frequent crashing.

What is the best environment to run Ableton Live 8 suite, so that it will not crash on a regular basis?

The other thing is, what do you do when Ableton goes out of business? How do you "authorize" any future machines when you upgrade/change out your own hardware?

You don't do anything. You're fucked. It's proprietary software, with a proprietary file format meaning when Ableton no longer activate ...

Yea, a little less than the cost of Ableton Suite 8 actually, if you say 14-18 years ago. - I bought my analogue stuff when people were giving it away....

and i made music when you still had to buy expensive hardware synths and samplers, so for me software prices are heaven on earth...

It's very unfortunate that there are no real alternative/competition products out there when it comes to non-linear work-flow. Because of that you either have to deal with/learn Live or use more traditional concept. Bad luck! :wink:

if you don't like ableton, try logic, pro-tools, cubase, acid, maybe also fruity loops, garage band, and then report back if they are better. I heard good stuff about those programs, and there are a lot of people using them. but I am happy with live already. bye
