It only works with audio, it's an audio effect not an midi effect. So here's what you do. You put the compressor on the bass track, I guess that you have a virtual instrument on there to make the bass sound. Then you activate the side ...

You cant' sync it. That only works with midi, not with audio. Your friend needs to adjust his tempo to your output, since he is more flexible with the recordplayers in terms of adjusting the tempo.

Well, I guess you want to use the DJM as a controller, when you turn a knob on the mixer live response right?

DJM > Midi Out > MIDI in Cable on the USB Device > Midi USB device > Computer

If that doesn't work try the other cable...

When working with cd, the only thing you should keep in mind is that the end file should be 44.1Khz 16Bit.

With Vinyl you should keep the bass in mono, to make a long story short : lot's of stereo lowend can make the record skip ( the needle pops out ). Also watch out with to much top end, imho ...

I've totally switched to drum-racks for this reason. The only downside of a simpler instance instead of the impulse is that it misses stretching imo. It also takes a little bit more time to set up but you can work in a more flexible way.

It could be due to the fact that you use live 5, live 7 offers better multi-core support if I'm not mistaken. Is live 5 even UB? I forgot...
