Triggering samples with recorded drums?

Post by Evoke Dogskin » Thu Nov 05, 2009 3:43 pm

Hi there.

I know there must be some way of doing this, but I haven't been able to figure it out, nor find anyone else describing it after searching here or Google.

I have a recording of a live drummer. All drums are recorded in separate channels. Basically, I'd like the recording of the kick drum to trigger a sampled kick drum so I can mix them together to get a bigger, and different kick sound.

Does this make sense, and does anyone know how I would accomplish this in Ableton?

Oh and I'm using 8 Suite on a Mac.

Thanks!

Simple solution if you do this a lot and can afford 35 euros...get this... http://www.apulsoft.ch/aptrigga/

There is no "audio to midi" trigger device as such in Live. If all you wanted to do was layer a sine under your kick you could strap a side chained gate with appropriate threshold attack, hold and release settings on a VST playing a continuous sine and feed it the trigger from your kick part.

Or for full sample replacement you can use slice to midi. If Live has added the transients in the right places, which it should if your kick track is isolated, then choose the "create one slice per transient" option from the drop down menu. Or add warp markers and choose the create one slice per warp marker option. Live is limited to 128 slices for this function so the number of drumracks you require will be determined by how busy your kick track is. Drag your new sample to one of the pads, then in the midi file move all the hits up onto that that pad making sure not to change their position in time (I'm not sure whether or not there is a key combo to restrict movement to vertical..)

Once your done launch the midi track(s) created by slice to midi alongside your audio kick track and mix to taste....

NICE :D
I was also looking for something like that. I've tried to make a patch in MaxMsp but it didn't work that well :P

Thanks!

i would try some sidechain devices (gate, auto filter) or that free stuff below (midiAutoToCC) which is part of piz midi package http://www.thepiz.org/pizmidi/

it is required to get cc from that plugin via buses: iac (mac) or midi yoke (pc). i described it here http://forum.ableton.com/viewtopic.php?t=127873 (changing aftertouch into cc or note) and here http://forum.ableton.com/viewtopic.php? ... 1&start=15 (program change into cc or note).
