device presets

Post by imthealien » Thu Oct 15, 2009 12:31 pm

When saving a device's current setting as a preset, how would i go about backing these presets up so as not to lose them if my library let's say gets repaired or upgraded or if I re-install Live 8 on my mac? (Is there a way to save the presets with the current project?)

Hello,

Device presets are stored (apart from the Live browser) with the sets where the presets are used.

The original presets can always be restored if you use the build-in Repair Library function (Also you can always download the products that you own from the main site), So I guess that you are talking about saving/backup your own presets, This depend on how you mange your Library & Projects you have a few options & Tricks but the thing that will help you the most is to develop (or adopt) a set of managing rules for your Library.

In order to find your own presets among your library it is better to save them in a dedicated folder per instrument or device (recommendation: make the Style sub folders there as well. mine are named "ANALOG Sounds" -in that particular instrument- inside that folder I have the sub folders for type & the preset name indicate the style & attributes) this will also help you when you decide what presets to backup.

Because Live smartly save ALL information with the clip including the preset data make a rule to make a few clips from the preset you are making (Tip: use the clip color to indicate the brightness).
Now this come handy because this let you save any VST preset inside Ableton Library (in effect bypassing the VST native midi bank preset system & The annoying manual folder navigation), Also it is very handy way when saving Instruments Racks that contain both VST & Live Instruments.
If you adopt (or make) a smart naming rules (lol & stick to them as well...) for the presets & clips you will get the fallowing:

EFFICIENT Library management/maintenance with easy backup (it coming...) but it will also let you switch the preset search method from search by instrument to search by style or sound attribute this make the Library an extremely powerful data base very similar to the "Core by Native Instruments" only 600 million time stronger as live can play whole sets & clips in browsing/searching mode.

Tip: for annoying VST like FM8 you can make blank clips (or not blanks) for the original sound bank save it in a proper folder & you can search the FM8 presets from inside The Library.

Now it so easy to make a project/set with all your preset folder system inside save it & use the PACK function save the whole thing on DVD or what ever, the idea is that the pack will install itself into the library in case of restoration or repair. In any other way (I think...) you will have to manually mange the whole thing!

Tip: naming the Pack with the date first ("12-23-09 Exploring Template" for example) will make it easy to track down & mange the next update interval.
