It's the device name specified in the form. I'm trying to name a device, "External Instrument MIDI Control" but when I do so I get the error, 'Invalid Device Name. Device Names can only contain numbers and letters'.

The maximum length when you tried it was 25. I changed it to 50 now. Should work fine.

Give it another shot.

I deleted the original device and re-submitted it, works now.

Thanks everybody for submitting devices and sending me your feedback. I've been able to make the changes you request almost instantly and you've helped squashes some good bugs.

The site is now live an active. Feel free to share what you're working on. At some point I will query the database for the first 50 people to share devices and offer them free advertising space on the site.

Think it. Build it. Share it.

Looks like you worked out how to make money on this. I hope it does better than all the other preset sharing sites out there.
So how do you lock the devices you sell on? Or how do you prevent somebody from buying a device and then upload it for free?

I need dots in the device name. "St.ascade" is rejected. I'd allow as well "-", "_" and other common conventions to create useful names. It should simply allow anything Live allows for a .amxd file name which is I guess the common denominator for file names of the two operating systems Live and Max are running on.
I think that would still work as soon Linux has enough market share to be considered as a target for commercial software as well...;-)

I'd also create a category "Library" for Max libraries to help building your own devices. I have to share one which is now at my dropbox account (http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/288305/St.ools%20for%205.zip). It could either be a link or a zip hosted at your site...

Stefan

P.S. you are faster than light, dots and dashes work since yesterday...;-)

Well the idea of selling devices on the site is a future idea. For the most part, I'm planning just to build a community of free stuff.

If I do end up adding the ability to also sell your devices, no locking. If someone uploads a device that is also sold it's a violation of the developers license and as stated in the Terms I would remove it and disable that offending users account when notified.

As far as sharing outside of this site in that scenario I think it's a lot like mp3. You can put all kinds of fancy DRM on something but ultimately if people want to share it they will. Until such time that Ableton/Cyclin74 bake something into the .amxd file format itself there would be nothing technically preventing you from sharing things you bought.

:-D As you stated in your P.S. dots and dashes work fine now. I thought of your library idea too. It's similar to "Macros" in Reaktor. Simple building blocks to re-use in other devices. I will definitely add that tag on the roadmap.

For device names, keep in mind that what shows up in Ableton is actually what the file name is, not what gets put in on my site to create the entry. You can name your device whatever you can put in a file name in terms of how it shows up in Live. For the purposes of representing that device on my site though it makes searching and security a lot easier to keep it simple.

Are you hosting this site on your own home cable connection?
I hope you have the hardware and redundancy / backuping set up to handle such a site there..

Max for Live is not even out yet. In a month of beta testing, only 9 devices were shared. Once the software is actually released and IF the demand actually turns out to be there, I will move it.

The technical requirements will be determined by the actual use of this resource. In other words, share so many things that I need to move it and I will.

To my mind this statistic is quite telling. M4L is a complex tool and if you don't come from a programming background, producing even simple utility devices requires a significant time investment. In over a month, the MFL forum on Ableton has averaged 10-20 messages a day - a tiny fraction of what I had expected to see.

I'm beginning to think the M4L is going to be a slow drawn out affair. The only devices I have seen come along so far to I would refer to as essential killer applications are the two step sequencing devices (the stand alone and APC/Novation grid based iteration) both of which can be accomplished with either free third party tools or dedicated plugins (which provide a far better user experience) such as Thesys or Numerology. I'm sure that for many the thoughts of paying $299 to run these type of device coupled with the realisation that they are going to have to wait for the talented folk at companies such as Covert Operators/PureMagnetik to create devices (which they are likely to have to outlay more cash for) isn't very compelling.
