Automations to a non-recorded track

Post by LasseMunk » Tue Oct 20, 2009 12:11 am

Dear Forum
I record choir using live, during our live-performance. Because we have arrangened the choir, I know what "is comming". Therefore i want to use automation panning.

How can I decided where/when a surdant track should pan, before audio has been recorded to it?

one way could be to have a midi clip on another track, whose data gets routed back into live, and effects the pan on your audio track

using midiyoke etc

Make a second channel directly below your recording channel. Open the Input/Output section and send the audio channel that is recording's Out to the channel directly below it. Make sure your input on your recording channel is your source (choir) and your channel is armed to record. When you have the Global Record on, that channel should be ready to record when you hit play.

Setting up the second channel, choose No Input for its source. Routing the above channel to it will default it to accept that channel's audio as long as you select "In" from the "In, Audio, Off" monitoring selector. Now that your second channel is ready you can either draw in the automation for the panning, or do a pre-recording of your panning into the channel. It should record nothing more than automation.

Your recorded audio from the first channel will feed into the second, and the audio will not be heard until after it is fed through the automated panning. You can also do additional panning tweeks if necessary in the first channel.. it is sort of like double jeopardy panning haha.

If you need to do this for multiple channels, just make a double for each channel.

Wait, is this for Session view or Arrangement view? (I did this according to arrangement view) If you are doing Session view, I would look into this:

It is basically the same theory.
