Slow MIDI Keyboard

Post by girovski » Thu Oct 22, 2009 7:22 pm

Hi all,

I'm a new user of Ableton Live 8 and I'm having problems with slow response time on my MIDI keyboard (M-Audio AXIOM 25).

I find when I play a note it takes such a long time to find the speaker that it's impossible to play. It's maybe 1/32 of a note. So often a whole note behind.

I'm guessing I need to free up resourses or configure Ableton a particular way.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated

Many thanks,
Alex.

I'm Using

Dell Laptop - Vostro 1000
WinXP Pro
AMD Turion 64 x2 1.6GHz Processor
2 Giggas of RAM

I reinstalled XP a few months ago so it's fairly clean.

BAckground software includes:
Norton NIS 2009
Itunes is on there
Wireless network

That's about it

cntrl+,

audio tab

adjust latency buffer to taste, watching out for the crackles.

You may also find this addressed in your manual.

Your notebook probably features a fairly standard consumer sound card which is not intended/optimized for real-time input/recording (lacks ASIO). The easiest way to resolve this issue is to install ASIO4ALL, which emulates the ASIO functionality on the software level.

http://www.asio4all.com/

I'd recommend acquiring an external quality sound card with native ASIO support though, as only these provide latencies in the <10ms domain. You'll also find that such devices offer (sometimes significantly) better sound quality than most onboard solutions.

Thanks Guys that really helped. Just installed the emulation software and it's dropped the latency from 286ms to 26ms. Great start.

Thanks again,

will probably be posting lots more simple (for you chaps) questions. I'm a guitarist who doesn't really get this computer stuff but I'm now well into learning. It's gonna be a long journey though.

Cheers,
Alex.
