This all depends on where you live. AT&T has a way better signal in the Bay Area of CA than Verizon. There's a lot of different terrain here and I get a strong signal in areas that Verizon customers don't get any signal.
I'm sure there's probably some web site(s) that can tell you which carrier has the best signal in your area.
Certainly true that service will vary by area, but I'm in the Mid Atlantic which has excellent coverage according to ATT's own maps. Also I'm surprised to hear you say that about the Bay area, as I was just watching/reading the editors at CNET complain last nite that service sucks in SF!
I'll also clarify that it's not getting a signal or signal strength that's a problem, it's dropped calls.

But SF is only 7 square miles of the roughly 50 miles by 20 miles Bay Area. SF is also an oddity in other respects for all it's claim to be tech heavy. My friend recently moved into a building where he couldn't get cable or DSL because the building wasn't wired for it and the landlord refused to upgrade the building. You wouldn't think this would be an issue or luxury and he moved right out.
But I could be in the many hills and woods in the area or small coastal cities and I still get a signal with very few dropped calls.

I think you can't download anything over 10Mb from the iTunes store unless you are connected to WiFi (at least that's how it is on o2 UK).
