Justice Bass...
Justice Bass...
Hi,
In the tutorial below a dude re-makes the Justice bass in reason.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-1fsg6NxUw
Is is this do-able in ableton? are there any distortion vsts that are similar to reasons "scream 4"?
I read that Liam from the Prodigy also uses Reason alot, so I guess its good for distorted sounds.
Thanks!

Re: Justice Bass...
This is the Reason why I always keep using Reason with Ableton Live. It's just, I could always get the sound that I want. Not that I can't in Operator or Analog, it's just the approach when it comes to synth programming in Reason is what I prefer.
Equipments: Softwares, hardwares, plastics and metal controllers, computers, headphones, a pair monitor speaker, and electricity to power them up.

any guitar amp modeling plugin can do the same thing, ableton live doesn't have one to boot though
justice sounds are always compressed...then compressed again
lots of micro samples, a lot of times the bass isn't a synth at all but a bit of guitar looped incredibly fast and tuned to the song

Re: Justice Bass...
Just put distortion, compress the hell out of it, put an EQ and play with it till you get what you want. EQ plays a big role when it comes to that kind of distorted sound for your ears to enjoy.

Thanks for the help.
"a bit of guitar looped incredibly fast"
What exacly does this mean? I think I know what you mean, I may have done it before, I recorded some power chords with distorted guitar + line6 guitar port and grabed the audio with those yellow marker things and pushed it all togeather, it sounded kind of like the justice bass.....Is this what you mean?
What amp modeling plugin do you recomend? (free=good)
Chelemasty....I have put distortion and commpression on synth bass lines, redux as well but it sounds rubish but I havent EQ'ed it. This must be what i'm doing wrong, I'll give it a go this arvo.

Re: Justice Bass...
Yeah man, lower the lows a lil bit so that the kicks and the bass doesn't cancel each other. And for the mid and the highs, raise it just a bit until the bass sounds right for you, it's going to help the bass fit into the mix. Don't over do it though. Add some Saturator also, it helps.wb wrote: Chelemasty....I have put distortion and commpression on synth bass lines, redux as well but it sounds rubish but I havent EQ'ed it. Re: Justice Bass...
you set the loop points in sampler/simpler so that they reverse the sample after it plays then it plays again
then you set the length of it so it sounds right, it shouldn't be too fast, but fast enough for a pitch to appear
simply saturating and reduxing is not going to do the trick... im not sure whats out there for amp modelers but im sure KVR has something
just search free amp modeling vst

Re: Justice Bass...
yo yo...
justice bass... micro samples is spot on! try running them through little beatmachines distortion and tube fx... like the boss dr sample or the electribe emx1...
for a sick amp modeler look no further than sans amp or amplitube. both are SICK!... justice uses mostly samples... infact you can use samples and simpler/sampler with fx to create most any sound you can dream up if you know the ins and outs of synthesis... im prtty sure that justice does not do much in that department though... they keep it simple and focus on the groove. but for that justice crunch just fuzz the shit out of it with some outboard gear compress it to hell.. throw a limiter on it and plop it in a drum rack

Re: Justice Bass...
If you have an iLok, Line 6 Pod Farm amp simulator is free. Also Waves GTR is free for a year. Recent issues of Computer Music and/or Music Tech have had a version Native Instruments Guitar Rig 3, I think they were demos. You can check companies websites for demos too. They all do the same thing basically, just with slightly different amp models. You can run anything thru any of these and get good results. Amplitude is excellent, especially their Ampeg SVX bass amp plugin if you're actually playing bass that's the best but to process audio, distortion in this case, any of them will work.
For Justice bass, yeah it's disco slap bass sampled, compressed, eq'd, resampled, distorted, compressed, edited, etc. They push digital meters into the red a lot also, which is supposed to be a serious no go area but Justice and TV on the Radio's Dave Sitek do it all the time to great effect. I guess that's one of the many reasons why they make the big bucks. If I tried that it would sound awful. They also record at 88.2, not 96 or 44.1 for what it's worth.
As for how they actually sample, the technique involved I don't know. Hurlingdurvish's suggestion for the Loop start/end points and play back/reverse sounds like a good place to start. Not sure how related it is but there was a cool sampler time stretching patch someone posted a few days ago.

I think there's a free one called Studio Devil. It's been in CM and you should be able to find it on KVR.hurlingdervish wrote:im not sure whats out there for amp modelers but im sure KVR has something

Re: Justice Bass...
i've got some tones really close to Justice's sound with ableton. the trick is running like 3-10 bass tracks into a bass bus and compressing them all. try creating a few bass tones that mix really well together.
saturator and live's compressors are your friend.
try this trick: as an effect on a basic synth line, run 10 utilities pushing the gain to 35dBs each and compress at the end (don't forget to compress at the end or you'll blow your speakers). mix this with a simple sine wave synth line and you can get some crazy sounds.

try your local Ministry of Transportation!wb wrote:

just kidding. if you run your bass tracks sends to a return with all the effects you want and select "Sends Only" as the output for each of those tracks that should do it.
Re: Justice Bass...
Ok thanks, I kind of understand that, would you have a link to any videos or a tutorial that will explain how it works and what it does?

Re: Justice Bass...
Can't think of any off hand, but i'm sure they exist. This is a pretty common question on this forum. Just try search for "justice bass" and look through the threads.wb wrote:Ok thanks, I kind of understand that, would you have a link to any videos or a tutorial that will explain how it works and what it does?
