Feature Request: Send To Next Device

Post by j250x » Mon Oct 26, 2009 5:31 pm

Something I'd really like to be included:

It would be great if there was a reserved send and a reserved receive name which would automatically send data to the next Max device in the signal chain. So for example 'send nextdevice' would only be received by the object 'receive nextdevice' in the following max device in the chain. The advantage here is that information other than audio or MIDI data could be passed along the chain just as easily.

Unless anyone knows an easy way to do this already?

as a workaround check out daniel buttner's randomizer max device. there is code in there to randomize the params on the next device. so im guessing one could adapt that to get what you need . you'd need to have that control exposed in your max device though as well as having it be a live.dial or live.numbox or something like that. not ideal, but it should work.

I just created a patch that might help because I had a similar problem.

This patch takes as input the index of the parameter on the next device to the right in the chain that you want to automate. Just use the patch in the device that is to the left of the object you are trying to automate.

It outputs the id of that param which can be sent directly to the right input of M4L.api.DeviceParameterRemote to automate it.

This is especially handy for devices like racks that have Macro controls on them. Your devices can link up.

Thanks for the workaround. Unfortunately what I want to do is send a massive list of data to the next object.

Is it possible to get the number of the device in the signal chain out of live? An easy workaround would be to create a forward object which routed automatically to an address which contained the device number + 1. I've built that part of the patch. Can anyone help me finish it?

I believe you can navigate from this_device to canonical_parent, then ask for the total number of devices. I do this in the patch I posted, but instead of asking for the number of devices, I ask for device 1.

"path this_device canonical_parent devices 1"

that gets me the second device in my tracks device chain.

You could iterate from 0,1,2,3 etc...find where you are by comparing your id with the devices, then find the index of the next device in the chain. Juts thinking our loud here, not sure if that is the most efficient way.

Even better, find your index in the chain using the above logic, get your id like id "21". Use the patch I posted but pass in the next devices index "you + 1" here "path this_device canonical_parent devices $index", then communicate to that device what channel you are sending on "your id"
