My main daw is Logic, but I have played with the Live demos for about two years. This summer I bought Live 8 because the APC40 would be a dedicated controller and I wouldn't have to always start from scratch with mappings. So because I have learned (and am still learning) Live using the APC40, my work flow is easier. I plan on getting a Launchpad for several reasons:
1. it's very portable
2. hopefully with M4L, it can be utilized like a monome in wacky creative ways
3. when I use it live, I won't have the footprint of the APC and have a bunch of knobs that I probably won't use live.
4. it looks like a giant piece of candy! :D
Hopefully soon I will finish some songs that I want to take out with a small band, and convert my logic projects into live sets, organize them with the APC40, and then perform them with the Launchpad and MPK49 (and a shitload of other gear!)

Sorry, but I don't think you understand what I'm saying. I'm saying that Automap doesn't work with native live devices and that is why it is crap. I know you can use midi map mode to use it but then you're not using automap, you don't get to use the great automap features and interface and you don't get all the little lights on things like the remote SL working. I have confirmed this with Novation support.

actually i think everyone does understand what you are saying... but you keep missing a third possibility, which is Live instant mapping, which you can use alongside Automap and MIDI map mode...

this thread is making me really glad i never got an APC

and while ill probably get a launchpad (on the cheap the next time im in the states), im wondering if itll even change my workflow that much. .

the ideal controller is one that would allow me to change routings of sends / ins / outs without the mouse.

i realized most of the time im using live im doing that and adding / routing instruments and effects. . the recording and clip triggering part is so easy already.

i guess with 64 buttons and max4live you can handle that in some way :)

i'm interested in routing and sending capabilities myself, so can't wait to play around with the launchpad. what i like are the virtual faders it has, they're really cool :)

And I'm saying you're wrong as I explained more than once. Novation Ableton template works well with all of Live's native devices. For example, the bottom right buttons of the Remote SL controllers arms a track and at the same time selects the 1st device or effect in that track as the selected device for the 8 automapped rotary encoders. The 8 encoders map instantly to the first 8 controls of any Live device or macros in a rack.

I'm not talking about using regular midi map mode at all. And you do get to use them with the automap interface and all the pretty little lights. Remote SL controllers already come with an Ableton template. And for other Novation contollers like the Nocturn, there's remote midi instant mapping script which is a built-in feature of Live that users can customize. Users like djsynchro and guille have utilized such scripts and have shared their results in this forum.

Thanks for the tips, I wish novation's support had made that clear to me as I was led to believe that the only way to use novation controllers with native ableton devices was to manually map them with midi map mode - you've just made my day :)

I never knew there was a user upload section on novationmusic.com until now! I have uploaded the Live instant mappings stuff and also my Nocturn mappings for UAD plug-ins.
