Well, the good news is that there are large numbers of talented people devoting their working lives to solving both of these questions- making more efficient/alternative fuel motors, and replacing paper especially in the construction process. There is clearly a lot of money to be made in finding the right answer to either question. But, just to illustrate the complexity of the problem- your magic wireless tablet which can show you any piece of the building as needed. How much paper does it save? How much energy is needed to manufacture and transport that paper? How much pollution of what types does it produce? Now what about the tablet? We can safely say that the tablet, being a complex technological artifact, requires a high investment of energy and resources. Metals, glass, and plastics, in particular, are very high in the amount of energy they take to manufacture- much more so than paper. And the tablet consumes energy constantly while in use. But more worrying is the fact that the tablet will almost certainly be obsolete after 3-5 years, meaning you have to remake the same investment in resources over again. So I don't think its a clear win for either solution. Maybe, if we actually studied the question (no doubt some have), we'd find that the amount of paper saved trumps the amount of resources the tablet will use. But these questions are very much dependent on context- where did the paper come from, how was it made, what happens to the tablet when it reaches the end of its life, etc.arctic ranger wrote:
heh...well a couple of years ago when i first started in construction i thought it would be cool to use hybrid engines inside manlifts. for the most part you could run on the electrical side making minor adjustments then when you need power the motor part will kick in.
just recently fully electrical JLG manlifts have come out with a small backup diesel engine to charge the batteris when they need it.
i also think that there is room for this type of technology for cranes as well.
my craziest idea comes from the freaking unbelievable amount of paperwork it takes to build a plant/building/whatever. i work as a industrial steamfitter
and the crazy paperwaste can definatley be avoided. there's drawings, iso drawings, cutsheets, 3-d renderings, revisions, and test packages. most iso drawings have a spec sheets on certain things that are repeated and redundant. also if you are looking for a piece of material you make photocopies of the original then when you find it you throw it in the trash.
so what im proposing and im sure the technology is out there. is a durable rugged touchscreen tablet thingie thats hooked up to a wireless network at the jobsite. so for example, if you are looking for a spool piece (piece of pipe) and you need to see what it looks like - just type in the line number in your tablet and a cut sheet comes up. then if you need pipe support specs just call up the spec sheet. when you deliver it to where it has to go then mark it of as being signed off to the foreman who receives it and has one as well...then that foreman needs to see a 3-d rendering then he can call it up.
and THEN if the engineer decides to make a revision he lets the worker know through the wireless network...i can go on and on, but i hope you get the idea. anyways, almost all of this stuff is done through vast amounts of paperwork...just the receiving alone reguires forms to be filled out in triplicate.
ive told some people that i work with about this and they think its a good idea, but dismiss it right away as being too hard to implement. i think it can be done.
k...too much typing...ive peaked for the day![]()
time to go make beats
It is a very hard idea to implement, but it is absolutely coming down the pipe. Will it help, and how much? Depends on the details.

A cording to that article ^^2nd up..
2008 was the 9th hottest year in a 130 year record, they say 2010 will be on track to be just as hot if not hotter than 08.
Old news is as follows; We have the technology to slowly change these trends (global warming) and make money. Problem is that people are fucking greedy shit heads. Personally,.. We are stuck in all of these "traditions" causes nothing to happen quicker. We think its ok to reproduce the same amount of children as are grand folks and are parents,(are you a farmer) The need to want more kids is stupid. The company's we work for think its ok to ship are products through the use of trucking industry's instead of instituting other options such as trains, the fact that in the last 30 years or so we,ve actually reduced the use of trains even while this machinery has gotten smarter and more energy efficient. The fact that most of us are still using energy from an outdated electric grid, AND making newer more "personally efficient" independently controlled power methods unaffordable.... Unaffordable because you know the middle and lower class just got bigger only because "they" thought they could make more money sending our jobs to mexico, to china. and policy makers get a cut in all of this. (not your friend) Remember the system was designed by them for them not for us. We're just the sheep that buys the shit!, we vote .02 percent of the time...its not even an option. God!....Honestly your senator won't vote on things... because of his belief, his popularity after all is always at stake.
You want to change things for the better. Stop making babies, use batteries and solar power, if you have to commute to work MOVE CLOSER! Recycle your trash. Sell your fucking boat you yuppie your not even close to a lake!!!

"Save the planet" does indeed = "Save me."
Why the hell would anyone care about a planet if there were no life on it? It would be like being in love with the sun or something.
And what about the sun? Shouldn't we start a "Save the Sun" campaign? We know it's only got a few billion years left in it. We can make a difference!
There's only one surefire way to completely eradicate your carbon footprint: kill yourself.
I would like to encourage everyone who wants to save the planet and do their part to go ahead and take this crucial step. We're counting on you.

And of course that's the obligatory response.abort wrote:stringtapper wrote: There's only one surefire way to completely eradicate your carbon footprint: kill yourself.

Problem is: I don't care. It's not my fight so I don't need to participate.
Sure I put the bottles in the blue bin (actually just because it makes dealing with trash easier) and I turn lights off when I'm not using them (I actually just like darkness) and all that, but the way I see it we're going to go extinct one way or another. If global warming comes to get us within my lifetime then at least I will get to watch it happen.

The 'save the planet / kill yourself' graphic really sums up whats at the bottom of all the Green nonsense and hoopla.
It's pushed by folks who think Mao was a great man who just made a few (hundred million) mistakes. They peddle the idea vigorously that the planet we live on is very easily pushed into some horrible disequilibrium by our every move, and so we must listen to and obey our enlightened green masters who know better and are kind enough to show us the way to a glorious new utopian age.
Environmental Disaster is the holy grail these One World Order folks like Al Gore have been looking for, to 'unite' the masses before a common enemy and make them frightened enough to accept a draconian new order. The people who push this (at the high levels, not on music forums;) always envision themselves in charge and at the top. It's up to the rest of us to change our evil ways, stop reproducing, submit to the 'common good' and so on.
Bunk.
They believe their time has come, with one of their drones in the White House, and are all wee-wee'd up with excitement over the big 'putsch'. Don't give these people or their ideas the time of day. Vote them down every chance you get. They do NOT have your or my best interests in mind. If the seas rise, move your f&%#ing towel back a few feet. Out of oil? Go nuclear. We live in a much cleaner world than we did in the 1970's and before. Fighting pollution is good and I'm all for that. Fighting pollution is good for people. What's good for PEOPLE is what's important, not what some think is good for some new age anthropomorphized hallucination of 'mother earth'.
AGW is a religious order of the worst sort. Their aim is attaining power over others, nothing more, nothing less.

Some interesting reading here:
http://www.green-agenda.com/globalrevolution.html
But by all means just use this as ajumping-off point and do your own research. Lose some sleep over the insanity, perhaps, and the scale of it, but don't lose any sleep over the environment. That will outlive us all, many times over.

If you really want to get deep into it, check out Lucis Trust, Alice Bailey, and World Goodwill.... the spiritual side of the UN. Hmm, a UN NGO whose philosophies trace directly back to Blavatsky and her declaration that a one world religious leader will emerge at the dawn of the new millenium. These are the same people behind Zeitgeist I/II, Davinci Code, etc.
