I get a message saying I can't save file in my directory

Hi tymoney,

please give us more information about the version of Live, your operating system and your computer hardware.
Furthermore what do you have to do to get this message and what exactly is the message text.

the message is Cannot rename directory or file 00-wav to "my ruff mix".wav

If you are actually trying to rename a file to something with quotes in the name "xxx".wav, it will not succed (on PC anyway).

like conny wrote, " is not possible to be used within the name. But ' should work.

This is what happened, I bought a sample cd, copied it to my hd ,placed it in the file dir. in Live and when I went to rename those samples I would get the error message.

Copying from CD often takes with it the readonly attribute from the files on the CD.
Check the General properties for the folder or the file(s).

I think even if you move files, the readonly staus will follow them.
I think it's a good custom to put files on CD's in zipped form, then only the zip is readonly (but can be extracted), not the files within it.
I don't have a better tip than changing the folder/file properties when the files are on your drive, though.

If you load the files in a new Live set and then save that set self contained, the files will be copied to a new directory. I'm not sure if the readonly attribute will remain on the copies. You could try that.

I never tried that way , I really don't know how to , I have a Ibook g4 , say for instance, .. I edit a sample and I want to resave it as the newer version and hit save in the clip open box, it wont let me. I know i should rrtfm , I just think the manual is for the basics for running Live , but when you start to really venture into experimenting with your creative flow and wish it could do this or that, that is when you start having fun with trying to figure out why things are crashing and error messages popping up , this forum comes in handy and thanks to people like you
