"touch only" - record automation

Post by bedhoe » Wed Oct 28, 2009 9:50 am

What i miss the most about Cubase 5 is being able to have a loop of a VST synth (in the arrangement window)
and recoding automation inside that loop without overwriting the other automated parameters.

As long as i don't touch the automated parameters they will still be there on the second pass of the loop.

For example:

To have a synth bass line loop and automating the filter on the first pass of the loop...
On the second pass (while it is looping) tweak oscillator tunings,
on the third pass attack and release and so on...

When i try to do it in ableton the automation i recorded on the first passes are over-written.
Even if you have a controller (i have the apc 40) it is not possible to tweak as many parameters as i would like on the fly.

This is in cubase a SUPERB way to make VSTs sound properly analog and finding fresh original sounds....
I'm very suprised it is not possible in Ableton.

Or am i missing something like an idiot??? :D

yeah there should be some sort of latch fucntion where the automation isn't overwritten unless something new is added
i get round this by having a button on my controller assigned to the record button
turn record off before it makes the next pass, turn it back on
it wont record over the automation now
tweak another parameter
record off and on again
etc

its not ideal but at least it leaves the track playing and ya can stay in the vibe of it

Wow, it's good to get some clarity on this. I just thought I was using Ableton wrong... now I see its a serious oversight. I guess you could make separate dummy clips for each automation you want to record and collapse them into a group, but thats a pretty complex workaround.

+1
ctrl + left/right = select transient

ctrl + shift + left/right = select between transients

ctrl + space = play selection

AAARRRGGHHH!! = +100000

yes i am shouting sorry. Come on, I need to record passes here...without overwriting automation. Not that hard to do is it?

This really limits drum rack useage.
