Re: Only 5% of downloaded music is paid for
That's a very interesting article - has been linked to many times by internet rights/politics sites here in Germany as maybe a model that the new German government will follow.90's child wrote:In other news:

I hear Clive Bull on LBC radio taking about the article/link above. He sayed the 5% figure.
Personally I find it reprehensible - always looking backwards at ways of bolstering up the music industry. They should be looking forward to the future, to find new ways of doing things...
Re: Only 5% of downloaded music is paid for
I'm afraid music will lose depth because people can't make a living from it like they used to and will just make music for a while in their 20's before it becomes unsustainable. Nothing wrong with that, but there's something that comes with having made music for 20-50 years...depth.

let me get this strait....you're saying only commercial music has any depth? seriously?ethios4 wrote:I'm afraid music will lose depth because people can't make a living from it like they used to and will just make music for a while in their 20's before it becomes unsustainable. I'm not saying my music is great art but I've never made a dime and I don't plan on stopping any time soon.
Re: Only 5% of downloaded music is paid for
I'm having problems finding anything that's worth paying for whether it's officially offered for free or someone expects to get paid. 99% of the free music I've heard hasn't motivated me to put it on my iPod. I WANT to buy music. But I want to find music that makes me want to buy it.
I also quit getting MP3s from friends who have libraries of pirated music. It just feels soooo empty.
Several things of mine and a music partner's are coming out on nice arty-fartsy vinyl... hand-painted covers etc this year.
On the music-doesn't-make-money-note.... touring and promoting can cost a lot of $ before you profit at all so I'm considering going back to school to get paper so I can get green paper. I'd prefer to dedicate my life to composing, singing, creating and making people feel good and get sustenance from that. But it seems nearly impossible.
Cheers,
Liz

They thought "yeah we could easily knock out an ep a week and make £120k a year". Maybe retire at 45.
Now who's laughing you dicks? I've been getting paid and have work/real world experience but still make music in the evenings and at weekends. I love the fact that there is no pressure and I can make what I want. Yes the most I have ever been paid for a track is £350 but so what, I just love making tracks at my own leisure. I don't want to be a DJ or fly around the world playing at festivals.
Now you losers have realised that you have to get a proper job but you have no experience so are struggling. Who the hell is going to take on a 30 year old dude with no work experience? Sorry but its become clear in the last year that actually I'm the one who was right. Yer so I missed getting wasted at a few London Sunday night raves cos I had work the next day.
But the fact is that I can afford new studio toys when I want but you're still sitting on Logic 5.5 and you have to keep bouncing audio through Camel Phat one track at a time.
Hahaha I won.
I heard somewhere that people will pay $1 for the song but $2.50 for the ringtone.
http://musicianstools.wordpress.com/200 ... tual-song/
” While the downloads of mobile ringtones and realtones will comprise the bulk of revenues ($4.8 billion), the market for full-track downloads is expected to increase from just $20 million in 2004 to nearly $1.8 billion in 2009, while ring-back tones – already generating substantial revenues in Asia – should be worth $2.7 billion worldwide by the end of the decade”
I just buy used CDs, artists don't get the money that way either.

A long time ago, before the internet took over the universe, Willie Nelson said something that has always made a lot of sense to me - "Take care of the live show, and everything else will take care of itself".
I haven't bought a cd in years, but I have gone and seen a lot of formerly unknown to me bands, and have bought tickets, vinyl, and shirts, etc.

I think the reverse to that. Once money isn't being made from music, the people who do it for the love will continue to make music and won't have to dilute their sound to sell records or appeal to a mass audience and the ones who are making garbage will disappear because they will see it as nothing to be gained, this includes all the suits who make money from music and don't have a creative input, don't even enjoy it or understand it.ethios4 wrote:I'm afraid music will lose depth because people can't make a living from it like they used to and will just make music for a while in their 20's before it becomes unsustainable. How much does it cost you to make music and have people hear it? A Laptop, Live and an Internet connection, so why do people think their should be a massive financial turn around for investing some time and money into something they are doing for the 'love' of it.

I expect the opposite, music will become deeper because only the people who don't care about the lack of money will be doing it. In my opinion the music industry has strangled every last penny out of this piece of shit industry and now it's punching the dead corpse screaming "come on you dirty bitch, give me another dollar!"ethios4 wrote:I'm afraid music will lose depth because people can't make a living from it like they used to and will just make music for a while in their 20's before it becomes unsustainable. nah, the Hollywood hit machine is only getting warmed up, grabbing the allowances of 14 year old girls. there will be more boy bands and Britney Spears making vapid, pointless music forever.Johnisfaster wrote:I expect the opposite, music will become deeper because only the people who don't care about the lack of money will be doing it. the business has already evolved, I'm surprised people are still making threads like these. it's all about live performances.
as for people that can't find music worth paying for, I wouldn't brag about that. open your ears, go explore, find new music, it's out there.

Actually that's what I meant when I said the industry was dead, I mean the soul of the industry is dead. It's still pumping out hits but there is no soul anymore. Definitely a zombie music takeover. As time goes on it's going to get worse and worse until I'd much rather eat glass than listen to a top 10 record.Tone Deft wrote: nah, the Hollywood hit machine is only getting warmed up, grabbing the allowances of 14 year old girls. there will be more boy bands and Britney Spears making vapid, pointless music forever.

Personally I've always liked bands that attempted to envelop you in an environment of ideas or concepts.
Album artwork and odd bonuses etc. I've always felt augmented the music. I though CD's were too small to truly do that, and online store like iTunes don't do that either.
I think if I ever get around to releasing a CD/album it'll have some odd feature that you can't download, a hologram cover or some other personal touch.

Re: Only 5% of downloaded music is paid for
Of course I'm hopeful that taking money out of music will make for better music, but I also think there's a correlation between the amount of time you have to spend on making music and the quality of the music. For example, if I was making a living from recording music I would do it all the time because I wouldn't have to go to a job, and when I make music all the time I get into much deeper levels with it.ethios4 wrote:I'm afraid music will lose depth because people can't make a living from it like they used to and will just make music for a while in their 20's before it becomes unsustainable. Do you think Led Zeppelin or the Beatles or any of those guys would have been as great if they had had day jobs to pay the bills?
Of course, its also true that recordings have never paid as much as performance, but with 360 deals becoming more and more commonplace, performance income takes a hit too.
