cpu efficient plugins for laptop use
Can anybody recommend (very) cpu efficient plugins that would work well on a MacPowerBook 2.4 GHz core 2 duo with 2gb RAM?
I came up with the following:
http://www.lennardigital.com/modules/sylenth1/
http://wavearts.com/
Any other ideas or experiences to share about using numerous instances of plugins on a laptop?
hhh

Don't do it..

People tend to avoid vst plugins for live use but try it and if it's stable then you are good to go. Have a plan B if your setup fail.
As for me, I have a 2.4ghz duo2core laptop too (acer) and I can stack 10-15 fx and racks on my master track without any problems. Everything is stable. I did not try a vst live though.

I've used U-he Zebra 2.3 a number of times live (AU not VST though). 2 instances with numerous program changes throughout the set. Not one problem. Most of the patches I've created are pretty simple and thus CPU friendly. I'll probably even use the 2.5 beta version at the next gig. His stuff is solid. (Although I'll have an older Dell for backup, just in case.)

Could you outline some of the issues with vst's on mac laptops? Isn't that configuration supported by Live or is it just too flakey?Earwax69 wrote:People tend to avoid vst plugins for live use but try it and if it's stable then you are good to go. Have a plan B if your setup fail.

I use VSTs in Live, I use AUs in Live, on a Mac 2.4 lappie, no problems, of course. I'm on Live 7. no idea what Live 8s like.
I've got Sylenth too, can run loads of instances of it, very CPU friendly.
Basically, at least in my experience, there is no issue with Mac laptops.

Thanks for responding, especially regarding your experience with Sylenth. Very useful info for me. Do you use any 3rd-party audio processing plugins like wavearts?dazzer wrote:I use VSTs in Live, I use AUs in Live, on a Mac 2.4 lappie, no problems, of course.
