M-Audio + Windows 7 = FAIL

Post by Destro » Sun Nov 01, 2009 1:01 pm

My trusty Oxygen 8 keyboard from M-Audio has been reduced to a paperweight ever since I upgraded to the 64-bit version of Windows 7. It seems that M-Audio is not going to release an updated driver for it. Anybody figured out a workaround?

On a related note, does anybody know of a cheap, decent midi keyboard that's compatible with Windows 7 (64-bit)?

Thanks guys!

PS: If you've got M-Audio products and you're thinking of upgrading to Windows 7, refer to this graph first to find out if your stuff is supported: http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=support.win7status

which begs the question...why did you upgrade and not fully understand and or realize that these sorts of things happen when you upgrade. if you did realize this then again I ask...why did you upgrade? was your previous system that bad?

It was Windows Vista and yes, it was that bad.

But you're right, it was my fault that I didn't check before upgrading. I assumed that if it worked with Vista, it should work with Windows 7. Boy was I wrong.

i had this happen on my xp media center edition with my trigger finger.....the fix is to find a soundcard that has a direct midi in and use an external adapter or find a non m audio product that uses a usb to midi conversion and just run the midi in that way.

Now if u get a midi to usb adapter it will be 40 dollars out of your pocket which could have been used for a windows 7 ready usb midi controller.

I currently use my xstation 25 without hiccups in my windows 7 64 bit...i haven't tested my xboard yet though...The key is to read up on a manufacturer's status with windows 7 before jumping the gun. Or you can play the time game because in 6 months m audio will make that driver to stop their profit losses for lack of windows 7 support.

I've herd rare stories of people that claim they've never had any issue w/vista...these are few and far between. Suffice to say I can't blame anyone running Vista for wanting some kind of alternative. My advise would be to give XP pro a shot.

Ran into the same issues with a radium while preparing my system for an upgrade to 64bit Win7. Really disappointing that's for sure.

I ended up selling the radium to a friend running OSX (which has working drivers) and getting a mpk eventually. Don't imagine I'll be going m-audio again though.. What's to say they don't do the same thing on the next windows release with all their current controllers. yuck

M-Audio are always the last to adopt to platforms. They didn't have working Vista drivers for a long time either and many of their Vista 64 drivers are still beta.

They can't afford to ignore the pull of win 7 unless they want to discontinue products and pee off a lot of people big time.

I must say, it appears that M-Audio are bent on bankruptcy - they seem determined to lose every customer they have by deciding not to code drivers for some very recent products or just being so fucking slow to code them.

That's being said, my Axiom 61 works flawlessly on Windows 7 RC x64, so I don't see why Oxygens wouldn't work. Did you try Vista 64 drivers ?

There aren't any Vista 64 drivers for the Oxygen 8. :?

Anyway, I gave up on trying to find a solution and got the Akai LPK 25 today as a replacement - it works totally fine with Windows 7 64-bit! It didn't need any drivers and just worked when I plugged it in. It's an awesome little keyboard IMHO.

Sorry, I didn't notice actually ! That's weird, cause they have vista 64 drivers for the oxygen 8 v2 , but not for the normal one
Anyway, I'm glad that you could solve your problem :-)

I always get a laugh at the look on my buddies face when he plugs his M-Audio controller into my hackintosh and it just works, no driver and no fuss. I am sure he will be sad to know that now he has "upgraded" to Win7 that his controllers wont work.
