OT - external firewire 800 not mounting anymore

Hey all,

I tried to get some Live work done this weekend but my computer wasn't having it. I wanted to tweak the mix of a song that's being used in the soundtrack of a Final Cut Pro HD project.

First I wanted to hear how the song sounded in the project, so I turned on the computer (G5). Next I powered up the firewire drive as I always do. I had my digi 002 set as my audio out in FCP, so when FCP was booted up it alerted me that the 002 wasn't on and the output won't be active.

This is where I screwed up. To be sure, I quit FCP and decied to restart the computer with the 002 already powered on. So I did this, but I forgot to dismount the external drive.

When the computer restarted the external hard drive icon was gone. It did not come back. I tried rebooting and blah blah blah. Nothing. Any suggestions? I'm on a dual 1.8, OSX 10.3.4

Help me recover all that is precious...

Uho... Sounds oddly familiar!
That's also my WE story: plugged the iPod then FW800 gone!!! Now the iPod's dead (waiting for the envellope to send it back) and I tried to mount the disk w/ FW400 to no avail. BUT it mounted on USB 2 port.
Try all the connections...

Hello

Diskwarrior may help here, worth a try! I have seen it be able to "see" a drive when nothing else would. I'm no expert though, especially when it comes to OSX

I have had this too.
I can't explain how and why this happened.
But repairing permissions seems to "fix" it. (at least in my case, i got the advice from somebody who had the same thing).

Update...

Well, I gathered some information and went back to my Mac with a few methods I was going to test out to see if I could recover my fw drive.

Upon powering up, the fw drive icon magically reappeared on its own. I clicked on it and all the files were there. So I clicked on a Live file to see if all was well. Well, all was not. As Live tried to load the beachball got cranking. The beachball came and the beachball stayed.

The beachball did not want to leave.

With a 24 hour Nor' Easter snowstorm brewing outside my window, the beachball somehow decided that it was suddenly summer and a beach party was in full effect.

So I'm loooking at a potential crisis. Looks like Discwarrior is now high on my list of shit to buy. But, the question remains... I'm right on the cusp of my G5's first birthday. I must decide... Applecare or no Applecare?????

Disc Warrior is DEFINITELY worth keeping around, not having it would feel like driving without a spare tyre in my car. While you're thinking about Applecare, you might also want to think about a Firewire 800 PCI card. I fried out a FW port on my old G4 and instead of sending it for a few hundred $$s of repair I just put a $40 4-port FW card in there and Bingo, more ports and money saved.

follwing solution did it for me:

- disconnect fw800 drive from computer
- disconnect power from drive
- wait 15sec
- connect power to drive
- turn on drive
- boot computer
- connect drive

at least i could get on working, and gives me time to find a better solution.
