Be Honest - Mp3 320 or Wav

Post by sm2651999 » Sat Nov 07, 2009 4:36 pm

Hi Ableton Users
I have read most of the threads about this topic but I would like a little support on if I should carry out my next task. I have most of my extensive music collection ripped at 320s but after finding out that Live converts them back to wav and stores them in the cache I am not sure if to re-rip my tunes as wavs? I started to do this with some albums and I was staggered by the difference in size. Hard drive space is available but its gone be a hell of a lot of work. My other concern was if a use created loops and samples from my collection within other musical projects will people be able to tell. So my question to you is, 1) Would you start again and re rip, or 2) Would you carry on ripping at 320, or 3) Leave current collection and start ripping wav from now.
I would appreciate any help and thanks for reading my post.
Yours Confused (again).. :?

as ableton doesn't understand mp3 as it should, i suggest wav only in abletonian world. else, i use mp3 320kbits and m4a plus (256kbits i think, the thing you buy at itunes)

lol

don´t be so harsh only because of his/her diction.

who told you that myth? of course live can handle mp3s correctly. or are you talking about the conversion matter as soon as you load compressed files into live?

but: using wavs and/or aiffs is always the better idea, not to mention the better audio quality.

if you want to use compressed audio files, just use flac.

first: ableton has no clue about mp3 tags which make one of the main features of mp3s (and aacs) completely useless in live, which, for dj purposes, are awesome. so it doesn't "understand mp3s" at all, it can handle them, but just as an ordinary wav, none of the additional features

second: it never plays back an mp3, it always loads it in, and generates a wav out of it, which it puts in a temporary folder. having a 15 or 20mb 320kbits mp3 then means you get a 70 to 100mb additinal wav temp file. so it's better to directly use wav, as ableton only works with wav. your original mp3s get completely useless afterwards.

I vote for 3), it's the most practical and logical choice and win-win for you.

I use MP3s of full tracks because Live can search the ID3 tags even if it doesn't display them. I hear you can apply ID3 tags to .AIFF files but not .WAVs, but I haven't tried this.

Perhaps someone will write an ID3 tag viewer in Max For Live to be used as an insert device (like Spectrum)?
