Vista 64 compatibility

Post by headquest » Mon Aug 31, 2009 9:04 am

A search didn't provide me with a conclusive answer to this - sorry if it's been confirmed before but...

I'm likely to buy a new computer soon, and one I am particularly interested in comes with Vista 64bit version installed. Please can somebody confirm:

1. Would Live 7 Suite install on Vista 64?
2. Would Live 8 Suite install on Vista 64?
3. Would either/both take advantage of the extra ram available?
4. Are there VST plugin issues on Vista 64 systems with Live?

Many Thanks in advance.

1. Yes
2. Yes
3. No, Live is currently 32bit and would not use the extra Ram
4. Can't help you with that.

Just a heads up. The beta period for Vista ends October 22.
The final will be released on that date as Windows 7.

Thanks - useful to know that is the switchover date. Systems I am looking at all include free upgrade to W7, but I would obviously prefer to wait and get it preinstalled.

Though live can only use 3gb of ram. 64bit windows will deffinatly improve the performance if you have more ram.

On a 32bit OS all programms together can use 3gigs whereas on a 64bit OS every 32bit application can use 3 gb.

Meaning if windows needs say 500 MB (completly random number chosen) and you have some other apps running in the background using another 500 mb, your only left with 2 gb for live on win 32.
The same scenario with win x64 and 4 gb ram means win+other apps using that 1 GB still leaves the whole 3 GB available for live.

Oh right - so that's cool then. So you would definitely recommend going for the 64bit operating system then?

before you go for it check if all hardware you use (audio/midi interface, controllers, etc) have 64 bit drivers available. Would probably be pretty anoying to go for it and then find out you need to get an new audio interface, or that your favorite controler doesn't work on win x64.

As far as live is concened I'd go for it.

I've been running Live on Win7 x64 for over 3 months now and have had very few problems (nearly none since I got the newest driver for my firewire chipset).

Same here. However, I am so looking forward to a 64-bit version of Live!
