Lame is a codec that your operating system will use, behind the scenes so to speak.

A better way to approach your desire to covert might be to download and install Audacity, and audio editing program, and use it to convert your files. I believe that Audacity will provide its own codecs. If not, it is likely that it will have explicit instructions on how to extend it's functionality (usually just a matter of obtaining a file, and placing that file somewhere specific).

LAME is an excellent mp3 encoder.

It's a lot easier to use if you get Razorlame - the graphical front end for the LAME encoder here: http://www.dors.de/razorlame/index.php

Read and follow intructions at the above site, encode on...

did you download the source code?
you'll have to build it in that case, follow the directions i the INSTALL file if theres one,
better option is to gab a program for your platform which uses lame:
http://lame.sourceforge.net/links.php
theres an itunes lame converter for mac:
http://www.blacktree.com/

i use max for batch converting files btw, most excellent

lame works from command line, for example:

Code: Select all

lame --preset cd filename.wav filename.mp3
will encode wav into mp3 with 192kbps

for more parameters try:

Code: Select all

lame --help
lame --preset help

lamedropxpd - best/easiest LAME encoder front end i've used.. creates a little square window and you drag & drop files to it and it encodes. does batches.. very handy
