King Dubby Audio Unit

Post by AdamJay » Tue Mar 01, 2005 4:18 am

i just DL'd this free plug and crossed my fingers hoping it would work in live (digital performer users get no such luck), and i'm happy to say it does. No issues with it in Live 4.1 (so far)

http://www.lowcoders.net/kd.html
sorry, its obviously mac only.

If you like a good tape delay plugin, and like me you love the degradation fx that come with it... check this thing out if you have not already.
what i like about it is that you can control the degredation %. and this gives it great capabilities as both a looping delay sampler, and a traditional dubbed out tape delay. the filter comes in handy when you get really deep into a delay loop that has totally mangled itself out of recognition.

cpu effeciency: 4% on my 1.5ghz G4 at 44.1khz. i can live with that.

That is a very fine thing indeed, thanks for the heads-up Adam. No vst though?

Hi
This is very cool the only thing that is a little strange in live is the delay value.
It says bars but i have to set it to 96 to make the delay one bar long.
Anybody else experienced this?

Thanks for pointing this one out Adam, not seen this before and it’s just what I need.
Only managed to finish my first really successful reggae dub track last week, now working on the next and this looks like it will come in really useful.

Going slightly of topic now: if you like dub check out my all time favourite Dub album, which is “A Dub Experience – Reggae Greats” by Sly & Robbie (1984-85 Island Records)
I love this one in particular because it’s just got a really nice sonic quality about it.

If you know any really good dub albums old or new please post them or send me a PM, I’m always looking to add more to my dub selection.

Ashley-k, while you're talking Sly and Robbie, yo could far, far worse than checking out the 'Drum and Bass-Strip To The Bone' album they did with Howie B at the controls-a perennial fave round these parts. Also the Meat Beat Manifesto album 'In Dub' (no clues there huh) is never far from the selecta-tron ;)

Adam, since you pc convert, any idea of something like that for PC ?
Sly & Robbie, real drem team, know nothing from them that is not excellent. Sly along with Dennies Chambers are the funkiest in universe, though Sly had a bit more of absolutely wicked cold laid back abilities

rikhyray...
head over to kvr-vst.com and check out both Analogic Delay, and Bionic Delay
Analogic Delay will give you the unique pitch shifting FX when you change the delay timing. Bionic Delay is the same but it gives you independent controls for L and R channels.

also mdsp@smartelectronix has an "Analog Delay" thats a bit more simple but still good. LINK its for Win and Mac but i've only tested it for Mac.

all of these are free.

King Dubby definitely has a couple quirks. like only 7 or 11 of the parameters are automatable in the Clip Editor of Session View (but all are there in the Arrange View) and yea you don't get the pitching FX. but in a way i like that. just like a good hardware unit, its unique and has its own character. It does great delay loops, and i'm finding it excellent for taking a drum loop from its clean state and slowly morphing it into complete noise, only to let it evolve back to its clean sounding state.

Thanks Adam, will def check out KD!

Not free, but a tape looper I love is Augustus Loop. He also has some other free plugs on his site. Mac only, btw.

I don't listen to a lot of dub, but one I've had for a long time that I still like is Automaton - Dub Terror Exhaust. Sly on beats, I believe... think it's a Bill Laswell production. Of course, there's also XTC's Dub Experiments!

And speaking of Sly on beats, if you're on a Mac and you'd like to have Sly play for you, check out Drumcore. Haven't picked it up yet, but reading very good things about it and it's creeping up to the top of my wish list.

yea i actually like it that way... if you turn the delay time knob in the KD GUI, you'll see it listed as fraction beats... 5/16th, 13/24th 95/96ths, etc. so basically instead of breaking up 1 bar into 16 or even 32nd note quantizations, they've gone all the way to 96th note quantization... which can make for some very trippy odd-meter delay loops.

I find that Karlette VST plug by Steinberg is fantastic for dub.

I recently did a dub remix...I mixed the backing track in Cubase down to a stereo mix, then imported that and the vocal tracks into a new Live set.

I set up nine (yes 9) instances of Karlette in seperate send tracks. This was fantastic as it allowed me to use Lives automation to turn each delay off/on as I required . I had settings that meant that each delay would continue indefinately so it would get real messy if I couldn't turn certain delays/tracks off when required. I was able to apply seperate sends to different phrases/words in the vocal track.

At the outro I had a ball with delays creating feedback via automation.

The end result was smokin'

My god! IT's full of stars!

This thing rocks. Yeah, the pitch/delay fx would be cool.

This is the first time I've messed with Live 4. I love it. So stable. Can't wait to mess further.
