How do you delete reference to missing files

Post by moneykube » Tue Nov 10, 2009 3:30 pm

When I manage my library , I have 12 files missing. I'm not terribly concerned about the files and searched my entire hard drive looking for them.... not there. SO.... Since I don't even know what project they are associated with.... is there a way to either delete reference to the files or somehow find out which project they are related to ?
Sorry... I'm sure this is a very noob question, but I have only skinned the surface of the program.

I sympathize. Being somewhat obsessive, I always keep my missing and unused files clean.

Most people would probably agree that the library management is the weakest part of Live. But it slowly improves. In Live 8, there was something added to help find missing files, I think the source file is listed when you show the files (you may need to enable a menu option in the browser at the top). I'm not sure about that, though, because I never had to use it.

To add to the problem, Ableton converts file strings to Unicode in ALS files, so you can't easily search for strings inside projects.

This may have changed, but those were problems I encountered in the past.

Thanks... never thought to look in the browser menu for that. 12 files is not a major issue.... but if they are gone .... they are gone and there is no point in searching for them over and over,,, A Perfectionist myself

One thing I forgot, sometimes the problem is the file extension.

I don't know how this happens, but sometimes the missing file is WAV and the real file is AIF, or vice versa.

And sometimes the extension is .aif and should be .aiff. Lot's of permutations on this...

I just replaced the files with different files... this works with every thing except als files.... It asks for 2 als files.... I locate them and direct live to the files.... it seems happy .... then I manage library again and the same 2 .als files are missing.... I'm still using Live 7.... I ignore the message now, but it is strange it can never remember where they are.
