if you are using the LP as a control surface in Live, holding down session+user1+user2 and pressing the down arrow switches between the integrated Live mode and automap mode...

How should the midi preferences be setup in ableton?

Control Surface: LP - Input: LP or AutoMap? Output: ...

And should midi map be running in the background...?

I basically want to map my own template, but still using the red box session view that still moves and displays clips etc... but only 6x8 not 8x8

I'm going by my Nocturn but you CAN use keystrokes with automap to control Live or anything else that responds to MIDI. True, Live is not an Automap Universal (meant for vst/au plugins) client. That's why there's Automap MIDI. You get 16 channels and countless pages to map midi and keystrokes.

No. But even if you don't use Automap for that, there's QuicKeys (Mac/Windows) which I much prefer over Bome's. There's also midistroke (mac only) which is free.

Seriosuly after days of trying to work out automap i am still at a loss. flashing lights, input outputs, no documentation, no client, automap HID, midi flaps, its just not worth the hassle. i want to write music not spend 3 days fiddling with my nipples techily as i navigate endless screens and menus trying out about a zillion different combinations so i can finally just map one button to the backspace key. I'll just move my keyboard closer to my left hand. Job done. :D

agreed, the combination of automap for vst/au plugins, automap MIDI channels for manual MIDI learn, and direct Live control is a complete headfuck, especially if you've never been through the pain of getting all that stuff working with another automap controller, like the Nocturn...

btw, the button combo for fireworks mode is session+user1+user2+mixer + down arrow...

to do manual MIDI mapping, you need to set things up with the automap server:

in the Settings menu:

1. set the MIDI output port to "Automap MIDI"
2. set the MIDI input port to "Automap MIDI"
3. activate 1 or more of the 16 available Automap MIDI channels

each Automap MIDI channel will appear as a separate map in the Automap server display... once you've got a map up you can change the "Group" in the top left corner to put the map in session/fx/inst/mixer...

use the left/right arrows on the LP to switch between the 4 default pages of MIDI notes/CCs... btw page 3 of the default map has a percussion/drum kit setup...

now, things get confusing because when you load up an automap wrapped VST/AU plugin, the Automap server will automatically create a new default map for the device... these maps are different beasts to the Automap MIDI ones... note that you have to use the Plug-in Manager to activate your VST/AU plugins as automappable devices...

Have you tried switching to fireworks mode while automap is running?

I have to restart live..
oh well... no fireworks while working...
