i have been working on a project that seamlessly integrates midibox's operating system (MIOS) with a liveapi script. the only programming you need to know is C for your midibox, since the script handles everything else automatically. for those looking to build a midibox and know C, it should end up being a great thing to work with and can help you make quite a powerful live controller. this entire system works without m4l.
for a detailed description of how it works, please read my blog over at the midibox forum:

i have also been thinking about developing a midibox kit for those who don't want to develop their own electronics projects and/or don't program in C. the idea would be to use sparkfun buttons (http://www.sparkfun.com/commerce/produc ... ts_id=7835) and a large display that shows the clip names, as well as various knobs and buttons. the end result will allow you to play a set without ever looking at a laptop screen. the possibitlities we have for control of live (triggering clips, automapping knobs and buttons) and getting feedback from live (clip names on an lcd, buttons illuminating different colors to represent clip status) are virtually endless. i am looking for someone who would be interested in having a hand in how the overall design looks and works. let me know if you're interested in teaming up.
