Creeping processor usage after long periods

Post by timothyallan » Thu Mar 03, 2005 12:09 am

Hi guys i've got a pretty big live set going, about 100 scenes, and about 10 tracks or so running on a Dell 5150 P4 3Ghz with 768mb and a 60gb 5400rpm drive. The audio interface is a Motu 828Mkii on WinXP SP1 with absolutely every tweak tweaked, power saving off, all appropriate services/cards etc disabled.

I'm using the O2 that came with my bundle and a BCR2000 to control it all.

Using taskmanager, I can see it running from about 55-65% with all the tracks active and playing.

As I go through the motions and get to about a half hour mark, I can see the processor start slowly climbing up. After about an hour, the screen redraws and meters are very slow and the processor is now about 98%. All of it is Ableton, and not system overhead from the firewire (at least according to taskmanager)

After that, it basically becomes unusable. Scrolling through the scenes is like swimming in syrup, and the meters also become unusable. However, if I shut live down, and reload the set, it will again go down to 55-65% and start the process over again.

I've tried to search for this in the forums, but came up with nothing for PCs... is there anything I can check out that is related to this or does -anybody- have -any- suggestions? I have a live show coming up soon where I'm supposed to go on for 90 minutes, and right now I can only do 60 before I need to shut Live down!!

Thanks guys,

Tim

*edit* Note that I am not doing any recording/resampling at all during this

i would say its live constantly wiriting to the undo file which is using more Ram and CPU as you continue with the set.. as live has endless undo .. if there was a purge tool it would clear the undo file and start over but there is not...

Hi timothyallan,

as iskandar already mentioned you should check if your undo.cfg or Log.txt grows up to much. For Live 4.1, both file are in:
C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Ableton\Live 4.1\Preferences.
Just monitor both files for some minutes while your song is running.

Furthermore you could try to reduce a copy of your song and check if the problem is then still there.
So it would be good to know if it still happens when all VST(i)s are removed from the song.

regards,
Alex
