Recording absolute values in session view

Post by Grappadura » Mon Nov 23, 2009 3:47 am

Its possible to route the modulation CC data out of live to midi yoke, and then back into live.

That way you can basically record absolute values in session view, you just have to split a track into 2 tracks, one is recording the midi cc, the other track containes the instrument, which is midi mapped to receive the incoming CCs from MIDI Yoke.

If you work that way, you can basically overcome the barrier of recording absolute values in session view.

I´ve tried it and it works, but its not smooth at all. Anybody has some experience on this? Where is the thread that I´ve been missing about it?

Its working!

Don´t know why it wasnt working before:

1. Draw or record an envelope in the envelope section of a clip (while in session view), choose a random CC value.

2. Route it out to MidiYoke.

3. Press play

4. Midi-Assign the envelope to a random parameter.

There you go, you can treat values in session view like absolute values. I cant believe nobody is pointing me to a threat where this has been done before.

Is that what people mean when they talk of "Dummy Clips"?

maybe because it's nerd stuff and has not much to do with music.

still cool that it works if you need it.

everybody is always raving about the fact that they want to record absolute values in session view. Whats the point if there´s a workaround? I want some info from the nerds :)

This is really old news yes you can do that. The search function is fucked on this forum but using the advanced search function in Google (no I'm not going to hold your hand and tell you how to, Google it) you should be able to find it. You should be able to N.

Yes, it is dummy clips of which you speak. The other neato thing is that if you set up a virtual output with the attribute of "remote", you can record automation data into clips on the fly (set the corresponding virtual midi input to "track")

Helpful?

No, its not dummy clips. We´re talking about recording absolute values. Instead of drawing a modulation envelope (thats dummy clips).

Thanks for this! Really brilliant:)) But does it work with Ableton's native controllers as well? It seems to me like you can only route midi controller to an audio track if there is a plugin fx on top...
Sorry I know I am double-posting, but Grappadura might receive notification about this post and not the one on the other thread. And Ableton forum is a bit of a mess...

Finally somebody noticing the point :). If you do the UserConfig.txt thing (search it if you don´t know it) you can control the blue hand from automation that is recorded in session view (independently of the midi notes). It works with several instances, I´ve currently got 4 blue hands that go crazy with the wii. I record the automation for only one bar, looping until I like it. I must show you with video.

I will post a video in the next days...
