Launchpad Issue

Post by citizenchris099 » Mon Nov 23, 2009 5:32 pm

Running Ableton Live 8.0.8 with a Launchpad connected via a powered USB hub (itself connected to my laptop via a movable USB A Male to USB A Female Adapter)
The Launchpad is chosen under control surface and is set to send and receive midi under midi preferences per the instruction.

Every once in a while I've noticed that the Launchpad loses connection with Ableton (or the other way around...not really sure). That is to say the red box disappears from the session view and Live no longer responds to the LP (and vice verca) I am able to go to midi preferences and re-select the Launchpad as my control surface and when I close the preference window the red box is back and the LP is now working again.

It should be noted that I have an Akai MPK25 connected to the same powered USB hub and it never has any issues (as in losing connection during a Live session)

In an effort to trouble shoot I've made sure to set up my other midi dices (MPK25 and Xone 2D) to only send midi leaving my Launchpad the only device that is both sending and receiving. Though I only played for another hour this morning after making said changes...the problem did not recur.
I've also read though many review commenting on the over all "slowness" of the launchpad midi responsiveness vs. other similar devices.

Anyone else experiencing this issue? Any ideas on how to properly resolve this (if it can be)would be greatly appreciated.
You guys have any clues as to

have corresponded w/Novation to see what they have to say about this. I'm sure they'll blame it on the USB hub or something but we'll see. Surprised their's not more interest in this...ah well.

Hi Christopher,

Thanks for your mail. This is an interesting issue that has not been brought to our attention before. The best way to test the issue would be to connect the launchpad directly to the computer and see if it persists. Although it is possible to use a hub with the device, we do not recommend it especially when there are multiple devices connected. Please connect the Launchpad directly and let me know the results.

Best regards,

that seemed like the bullshit-easy-way-out response of a hardware manufacturer.

but it sounds like a reasonable suggestion, what was your conclusion?
and for anyone interested what is the best powered hub to get?

I think it's generally known that bus powered devices should use their own power supply when connected to a hub.

which one to get? AFAIK they're all the same, I've never read about a bad hub, just misuse of a hub as in this thread. AFAIK any hub the OP would've tried would do this. it would be interesting to hear if changing the hub fixed this.

I guess at half an amp per input a 7 port hub (common size) would need to handle up to 3.5 amps (really it would be designed for at least 4 amps just to make it more robust) maybe that's more than they want to design for.

Its a 7 port powered Kensington (don't quote me on brand..will check when i get home) Suffice to say its a decent well built unit...for whatever thats worth.
The only devices I have plugged into said hub are the MPK25 and the Launchpad....both of which are buss powered (though the mpk can receive power via 3rd party ac adapter)
My Xone is plugged directly to the laptop as this was suggested in the manual and it is AC powered.

I will try connecting directly tonight and rock out....see if I can re-create the issue. Kinda sucks if I can't use my hub w/the Launchpad.

You should power your devices individually whenever possible...

I've got a Launchpad, Remote SL Compact, Axiom, external hard drive, and mouse plugged into my hub and everything runs fine. The hub has an external power source but nothing else does.

good advice. I'm starting to move in that direction for sure.

forgot to mention that I also have a small usb drive plugged into the hub (only buss powered btw)

so Rocked out this morning w/the Launchpad connected directly and no issues ...yet. I also noticed it seemed slightly more responsive and the like.

Perhaps you've already tried this but... maybe try it without the usb drive attached?

I have a Launchpad, Maschine, Kore, and X-Station (wall wart powered) running without issue on a bus powered usb hub.
