New Mac OSX Daw - Harrison Mixbuss

It just works
Re: New Mac OSX Daw - Harrison Mixbuss
Can anyone that's currently using Mixbuss answer a question?
When "jacking" audio from Live into Mixbuss, are you able to use any automation within Mixbuss, or is that only going to work if you take recorded stems out of Live and import them as audio into Mixbuss/Ardour?
I've been in the middle of mixing a few things with Live (some of my first completed projects done completely within Live), and while I'm really loving "composing" within Live, finishing the mix is kind of tedious (for me, at least). For some reason, the idea of an analogue style desk sounds really relaxing and productive to me right now.

edited.
(repairing permissions solved the problem of having strange messages when trying to select jackrouter as an audio out device in live prefs' panel. So I'm now approaching.)
feedback soon

FWIW, I ended up just purchasing Mixbus. After a couple hours of fiddling around with Jack, I got the audio coming from live into the Mixbus mixer. It sounded good, but I can't (yet) say that I think it sounds better...just different. Then for some reason Ableton lost audio, and I had to restart the machine to get everything back in working order. I know I have some sorting out to do in that department, and apparently there is a ver1.1 coming along for Mixbus.
That being said, I really enjoy working with the virtual console. It's really nice to be able to see all of my eq's and compression settings at the same time. What I'd really like to do now is get some sort of control surface to mix with. For me, I think the winning combination is going to be writing in Live, then mixing with audio ported to Mixbus.

Re: New Mac OSX Daw - Harrison Mixbuss
you're totally right in your last sentence, that's why I purchased mixbus (and also because I'm a gear slut..)
I'm just guessing if I'll manage to get it working one day
still struggling with connexion manager in jack os X. shitty one let me say. How could jack's programmers make such a simple task SO COMPLICATED and UN-NATURAL ???
cheers

Yes, Jack seems to be the weak link in the whole chain. The Routing GUI in PilotJack is terrible and inconsistent. However, once you figure out the quirks, you can get it to work. There are people using Soundflower, if that's a better option.
I spent another hour with it on my lunch break...I'm pretty happy with it.

I was just about to ask about Soundflower.
I'm curious if this program will give you the ability to get a louder rendered product?
I was thinking about getting Logic but Mixbus is way cheaper and all I really desire is a louder final product.
Any thoughts?

Re: Louder Product.
No, I don't think so. Mixbus has built in compression, limiting, eq, tape saturation...but so does Live. The musicality of these functions is more of what's in question. Mixbus certainly gives you a different flavor.

Re: New Mac OSX Daw - Harrison Mixbuss
where did you read that logic or mixbus would give you louder final audio??? you can saturate everything, overcompress, squeeze, boost, rise all faders in the red, with live.all I really desire is a louder final product.
if that's really your goal (despite this is not something really important, every audio player has a VOLUME button, gain pot, etc), check the mixing/mastering threads, "justice's sound" threads, and the "loudness war" topic.
but take care of your ears
Re: New Mac OSX Daw - Harrison Mixbuss
I am still really pleased with Mixbus, I like the virtual console layout too. Similarly, looking for some kind of compatible control surface.

Yeah, it just begs for a good control surface. I'm considering another midibox build just for this purpose.UKRuss wrote:Similarly, looking for some kind of compatible control surface.
Re: New Mac OSX Daw - Harrison Mixbuss
I just did a bit of quick math to figure out the parts needed to put together a midibox control surface. If I did a 1/1 match of controller/Mixbus feature, I'd be looking at the following order for a 16 channel, 4 bus, 1 master controller:
237 Pots
42 Faders
140 LED's
163 Buttons
That thing would be huge, but full of awesome.

Re: New Mac OSX Daw - Harrison Mixbuss
wtf??
Why so many pots, faders and buttons?
You may as well just buy a full on mixing desk.

Re: New Mac OSX Daw - Harrison Mixbuss
Yeah, totally over the top. That parts list would be for an exact controller replica of a 16 channel Mixbus setup. ie, 1 pot for each eq, sweep, pan, etc. There's two faders on each strip (1 for limiting, compression, etc).
I'll probably just build one with 16 channels, 4 busses, 1 master with only the level fader, 3 eq bands, 3 eq sweeps, pan, mute and solo buttons....and maybe the tape sat for busses, and the hpf pots...dammit, this is getting big again.
