RIP Technics
Re: RIP Technics
Until it is a statement made by Panasonic, there is nothing to mourn.

Re: RIP Technics
honestly, nope, educate me?
I have a 1200 and a TTX. the TTX spins up a bit faster, has a reverse button, you can control the speed up and down rates, it has line level out, you can change bpm without pitch shifting, lots of bells and whistles.
from what I've read is that if you get used to a TTX and show up to a place with 1200s you lose the skill to do that stuff by hand.
embarrass me.

Well at least they have more than +/-8 pitch, but when setting it to +/-50 it's just so tedious to make minute pitch corrections using only that 1 fader.Tone Deft wrote:better:
@everyone talking about the clasic design: A dj turntable is a tool, not a piece of art, what's the point of the most beutiful turntable if it's functional limitations render it useless? Sure if you're just playing elektro, house or tarnce and every record is withing the same 5-6bpm range you can get away with it, but try mixing oldskool breakbeat with modern jungletek, or anything in the direction of hardcore...+/-8 is just no where near enough.
To the comments that will now deffenatly come in the direction of: the songs are recorded at the speed they're ment to be played. Sure, many songs will sound crap if you pitch em too much. But just as many will still sound great or even better at completely different speeds. Take for example speaker freak by paul birken: In an interview he even said himself that he should have recorded it 20bpm faster.
Finally with digital DJ systems the path has been cleard for more creativity when playing. Technics limitations have held back the art of DJing too long, I will shed no tears for them.
(the MK5G or what they were called were a very small step in the right direction with the 16% pitch. But they only released those after vestax and numark were beginning to become serious cometetors with thier +/-50% turntables - they would never have bothered moving the slightest little bit by themselves)
As for build quality. True they are built like tanks. But the same argument that goes for the design. What use is a turntable that still work after 20 years if it's features are too limited to be of any use at any time?
Anyway I've had my PDX for around 5 years now (first gereration with the higher platter) and had them im more quarry and field mudfight parties than I can count and they still work like on the day I got them.

The beauty of the 1200 is in it's simplicity it does what it does and it's built like a tank. Kinda like those Steel Tonka Toys I use to have as a kid. Built to last. Built to be consistent. It just does what it does and never lets you down. Kinda like a Bro. I guess it's nostalgia.

I slipped into a daze, whilst I was there I heard the most startling music, it was at once familiar and alien, reassuring and unsettling.

Personally, I think it's a little sad myself. Like Fender saying they're no longer making the Strat. Like them or not, faults and competitors not withstanding, they ushered in a completely new way of reaching an audience, and guided the way music would be made in the 20th century. Quite a legacy they have.

we also need to remember that vinyl sales are having a climbing again.. not like CD sales, but definitely not going away.. given a choice between CD or vinyl, i still think the vinyl sounds better (given your using a somewhat decent needle and your records arent all scratched up).. vinyl = warmth..
..
did i mention when i die, i want to be buried in my turntable coffin? never gonna let my turntables go..
