Live as rewire Slave : editing events in Cubase?

Post by crook » Wed Jan 15, 2003 10:29 pm

hi there.

i have Cubase SX and Live 2.01. i'm synching both programs using rewire, where Cubase is master and Live is slave. so far so good.

now, i noticed this weird thing. you can't use individual events from Live in Cubase directly. what i mean by that is for example with Reason you can select each Reason instrument you create from within Cubase, and you can draw midi data in Cubase which will then trigger the instrument in Reason.

with Live however, you can only draw the audio loops in Live itself, not in Cubase. that's a pretty cumbersome way of working, as it means you have to create your track twice, once in Cubase (the VSTi part, midi data etc) and once in Live (the audio loops).

why isn't it possible to let Cubase do all the editing? with Reason this IS possible and it's perfect. no need to edit your midi notes in 2 programs, you can do it all from within Cubase. i only have to create an instrument in Reason, tweak it a bit, and then i can go back to Cubase to record notes with this instrument. with Live this doesn't seem to be possible.

or am i mistaken and can it be done with Live after all?

you are correct. you can not do what youre trying to do. your best bet would be to get 2 monitors so you can see live on one and cubase on the other, but why bother when you can juist switch sx's timestretch algorithm to timebandit and change the cursor to 'sizing applies stretch'. then by dragging the edges or right clicking and choosing pitch shift you can warp everything around right in sx just as easily as you can in live...

the reason you can't do this with live, is the fact that arrangements in live have squat to do with midi. when you edit in reason, you're editing midi, which can be sent to and from programs. the arrangements in live are just audio bits being moved around, so there is no way to send that info to any other program. it's the same as moving just audio segments around in an app like cubase, there's no midi involved, so an app like reason couldn't see it.

ok, i see your point. i guess i have made a fundemental flaw in my thinking about this issue. so, in this case i guess Live as a VSTi would be the thing i need. heh....i'll try to give the current setup a chance first. thanks. :)
