Akai APC 40 - anyone ever remove the side pieces?

I'm planning on toting this thing in planes inside a rigid case, and if I can save a few inches on the size of the device it would come in mighty handy. Anyone ever unscrew the side pieces? Are there any electronics sticking out if you do this? Perhaps someone knows of an exploded drawing or diagram of the insides?

Couple people here have done that and posted pictures. NO electronics sticking out, but it takes more than just the screws you see on the side to get the sides off.
