Re: putting more than 1 compressor on the master tk?
i find that doubling up can sometimes minimize the negative side effects of heavy digital compresson (like distortion) when you're trying to make a really loud mix. on a somewhat-unrelated topic, but i've been getting good results using a mastering rack that goes saturator-->multiband comp-->limiter chain (i'll get the multiband comp's peak output to around 0db and then use 5 serial limiters with the gain between .5 and 1.5db per limiter...it's a LOT smoother to have each limiter knocking off a DB or so (which is added with its own gain stage) instead of one trying to apply 4+DB of GR on a complete mix with a single limiter. and if you're doing the kind of work that requires really squashed, super-loud output, this is a good trick.

I learned a lot concerning control of an overall mix a while back from this article. It's a good read. http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jan01/a ... vanced.asp
