Using Volume Slider Without Changing Automation

Post by chris ott » Tue Dec 01, 2009 9:00 pm

I use automation on the mixers volume to create details in arrangementview but when I go to 'level' the track in mixer, I have either delete the automation or highlight the whole track and move it up and down in arrangement (which isn't as accurate at all).

Is there a way to move the overall volume slider up and down without affecting the relative automation?

Not directly no, but you can just drop in a utility device and adjust the overall track volume that way, independent of your automations.

That's too bad, I like to visually see the mixer, like a traditional mixer. Suppose I could do the automation with the utility.

Yup, I think lots of people round here do that - drop a utility into every track right from the start and just automate that as you say...

Nice tip! I didn't think of that!

I do all my volume automation with utilities.

I always ask my clients to automate Utility instead of volume, makes it MUCH easier for me to do a mixdown for them.

Would love to see Ableton add a 'trim' option to the automation modes :)

I normally just group a track into its own group if I need to mess with the overall level, seems to do the trick (I don't group much so it doesn't really screw with anything else)

Saves moving all the envelopes if you've already automated volume!
Some stuff, and some other stuff. Honest.
