Live 8.1 introduces a new file format!

Post by 8O » Tue Dec 01, 2009 8:54 pm

From the latest 8.1 download page... maybe this should be a sticky...

Live 8.1 introduces a new file format - documents saved with Live 8.1 or newer will not be able to be opened in older versions of Live.

Have Live project files ever been backwards compatible though?

yes, they've been pretty much compatible in the same Live x.0.y releases, e.g. if 8.0.9 was no good for you, you could go back to 8.0.8 and use the 8.0.9-saved files... course you can't open an 8.0.9 file in 7.0.18...

But 2 times in one year? man that really sucks..
And that Ableton never had a convesrion possibility is kinda lame too... a safe as live 7 file for example would have been a real nice move for a projekt stage that involves so many changes and possible bug problems

not to mention if you want to share a project file with someone who has an older version...

I always keep the previous version installed, just in case. I believe doing this would answer most of the issues stated here. For example, doing this allowed me to keep on using my sets that use Pluggo-based plugins, as they do not run with 8.1 (following the introduction of Max for Live).

That's the whole point of my post highlighting this change - if you kept your previous version, it's now useless for opening 8.1-saved files.

why is this any less convenient than not being able to open Live 7 files in Live 8.0?

that dont helps.. just had a live set at the weekend and... compiling all my stuff from pre live 8 ... pre live 8.1 and the youngest 8.1 stuff was so impossible..form whatever direction.. with live 7 it was at least possible to directly drag clips... into live 7 and 8 !!...

but the other way around? the new ersion should be at least be able to interpretate the asd from an older clip..but not even that...

i am actually looking fr a better program for stage use wright now... compiling the set is a major task ..exeot you play everx time the same and have everything preprogrammed.. but why taking a laptop than with you? an iphone is much better suited for a playback show...

(reversed:) You're right, it's no less convenient. It's just unexpected in mid-release (when standard practice has been to hold on to a previous version for a few weeks until you're happy with the stability of the new one). Backwards compatibility to 7 and 6, for example, would be awesome, but I don't think anyone's realistically expecting that... but you do kinda expect it within the major release's point-releases...

It helps me because from past experience, I know that I need to stick with the version that works the way I want, which is usually not the new version. 8.1 is the most drastic example as it does not open most of my pre-8.1 sets that contain Pluggos. So, while I experiment with Max For Live on 8.1, I use 8.0.9 for everything else.

The lesson here is that do not embrace the new version of any software before you're really sure what you want is still there... if you need to go back to the older version, then there is something wrong with the new version for you (leaving the sharing sets with older version users out of this)

yeah.. would definitely be nice to be able to open a project created in live 8, with any copy of live 8.

secondly.. was that disclaimer on the download page there since the start, or just recently added? i don't recall seeing that information when downloading 8.1 for the first, or second time (i've downloaded so many releases lately it's hard to remember)
