New Desktop as of Dec 2009 - any opinions ?
Re: New Desktop as of Dec 2009 - any opinions ?
that's your reasoning? because you can put them in raid 0!?!? that's ridiculous!
why would you put two 1 tb drives in raid 0 for the OS and software? you wouldn't need more than 500 gb total for your OS and software and the samples and library should always be on a separate drive. show me a benchmark that says 2 caviar green drives in raid 0 is more than enough to run the OS, DAW, plugins and all samples at the same time. you're talking about a 5400 rpm drive. it's going to perform slightly better than a laptop. that's not the point of a custom desktop build!
get a less expensive video card and spend more on the hard drives.
there's no point in running an i7 cpu with a 5400 rpm hard drive. i don't care if you put them in raid or not.

WD hasn't officially said the rpm of the drives. They've only said its somewhere between 5400 and 7200.
do you think a 300 gig 5400 rpm hdd performs the same as a 1 tb 5400 rpm hdd? And there are benchmarks around showing this hd is faster then rival 7200 rpm hdd
anyway I guess it depends on your needs. I need more storage then performance myself.. I have two X25-E Intel ssd for my os and apps, then 4 of the 1tb green for storage.. and I can honestly say the 1 tb drives are very good, especially for that price.

you need more storage than performance, yet you are running 2 SSDs for your OS and apps?
you've absolutely just contradicted yourself!
and the point is that he is going to run OS, apps, and samples from these hard drives... would you run your OS on a 5400 rpm hard drive? and it's been benchmarked to be slower than the caviar black drives.
i'm just trying to point this guy in the right direction.
i have 4 velociraptors in my DAW PC for (1) OS, (2) apps, and (3&4) sample librairies and would never consider running a slower hard drive for any of it.
i have an external esata drive for all misc downloads and mp3s and whatever else.
i think that's the way to go. but that's just me i guess. all i'm saying is if you're going to have only a couple drives in this system, they need to have a high capacity and as fast as you can get for your dollar.

I'm not very articulate..
the 1tb greens are extremely good if you take into consideration the cost per gb. and I know I saw a benchmark somewhere showing that they were just as fast as other drives. the 5400 rpm doesn't matter much since the platters are so dense.
SSD aren't practical yet. The ones I have were given to me for free. There is no way I would ever buy them at the price they are at, it's just not worth it..

The greens are slower.

They would be fine on a general use box, but I personally wouldnt use them on a DAW.

I've tweaked them a bit. also took 300 gig off each one, and they are almost as fast as raptors.
anyway, you cant beat $85

get an ssd. raptors are just "the fastest" of the slowest tech existing: hdds. a good ssd make your raptors look like floppy disks.

does switching to raid require system reinstall?
