Re: Soundcloud officially fucks you now.
The thing is, when Soundcloud came out their goal was to give musician's a better way to share music. They showed examples of ugly Rapidshare-type sites filled with ads, and how it was undesirable. Yes, the Soundcloud model seems much better for this, but, if they expect a penny from me, they can forget it. I'll use free Rapidshare-type sites any day of the week and keep my money.
Crumhorn, I think the way to go is to profit from the user's attention, not to expect monthy payments from them. Ableton can invest a bunch of their resources to create a Share system, but they won't get a penny from me. As long as there is a free way to do it, I think the majority of the population will go elsewhere. I think if you have the ability to implement a new product, you should think bigger then "welp if I can just make my mortgage payment..."

Re: Soundcloud officially fucks you now.
well yes, it reminds me that "sensible" belongs to the word category that we call "faux amis", that is to say "false friends"...Is French like German here: sensible != sensitive ...?
So, "sensitive" may be the appropriate word
In french, "sensible" means "sensitive", and "sensitif" means a kind of special power, that allows you to "feel" things with something more than the 5, eeeh, don't know the english word (view, touch, smell, listening, taste).

Re: Soundcloud officially fucks you now.
Hey guys, I just want to point to a little project I am working on called http://bln.kr (blinker), which is an alternative to the zshares, rapidshares, and soundclouds of the world.
Our music sharing platform is all about simplicity and sharing. Sign in with your twitter account (facebook coming next week), upload your track, get a short link, like http://bln.kr/3 that can be shared. Our links work on smartphones and we have the ability to embed your tracks right into facebook profile updates, which is something that, to our knowledge, no other service offers. We also offer a standard embeddable player for blogs and such.
We are still small and still in beta, but some great artists have used our services- The Streets, Little Boots, DJ Plastician, and The Subways.
Ultimately, we will also have both free and paid accounts, but rather than limit tracks/plays, our strategy is to offer more customizable tools for music sharing and promotion. Everything you can do on the site today will continue to be free forever, including the fact that we always stream tracks (to both desktop and mobile) at the full quality they were uploaded.
I do think it is important to note that music hosting and streaming isn't free. We have to pay server fees, just as Soundcloud and Rapidshare do. And for us to survive, we have to have a fair way to make back that cost. In the end, an artist either pays directly, by paying a hosting service like us or by building his/her own site and paying the hosting fees, or an artist indirectly pays via advertising. Either model can work, it just depends on how the artist wants to present his/her music to the world.

the twitter stuff is weird to me because I don't twit, but I have read the "do you twit" topic right here and lots of people seem to find it great.
I love that you allow direct streaming of original files!

Re: Soundcloud officially fucks you now.
Thanks man, I really appreciate it! We've got some great new features coming before the end of the year and be sure to check us out on your iphone/smartphone. I'm really proud of our mobile site, which has almost all of the functionality of our desktop site and all the songs stream right to your phone.
Thanks again.
Thanks again.

Have you concidered the feed back option that SC offeres?
I'm on SC right now, unlike a lot of people though, i had anticipated the addition of a cost at some point for two reasons, they had already said this would most likely happen, and it was also a bit to good to be true in the form it was in to last any ways, especially with the way things are in real life. i might even pony up for a paid account yet.
However, i could be tempted to move if there was some kind of networking invloved in the alternative, i quite like some of the criticle and helpful feed back i have gotten both in the player and also as PM's. Do you have some thing like this planned on the site?
15" 2.4 MBP/Live/Sampler/Operator/ Home made Dumble clone/Two Strats/One Jazz Bass.
