audio gaps on G3 iBook w/ Ableton 4.1

Post by metapathik » Mon Mar 07, 2005 5:34 am

i've got a fairly important live show coming up on the weekend (march 12), and since upgrading from live 3 to 4.1, i've been experiencing some relatively significant problems with my iBook...

here's the specs:

900 MHz PowerPC G3
640 MB SDRAM
40G Hard Drive
OS X 10.3.8

when triggering a new clip, the entire audio output cuts out for a brief (but supremely annoying) moment. this happens even when only one stereo clip is running, but it doesn't happen every trigger instance; i can't find a pattern to when it occurs...

i'm running a minimum of native ableton vsts, and no vstis or third-party plugs at all. the cpu never peaks above 40%, and i don't get any disc overload flashes either. i've repaired disk permissions, and my hard drive is fairly clean...

it sounds pretty awful, so any ideas on general performance tweaks or fixes to this particular problem before the weekend would be a real life-saver!! thanks in advance...

Hi metapathik,

it sounds like the "Keys and mouse clicks on OS X" bug we fixed within the Live beta 4.1.1b1. Latest beta is 4.1.1b4.

Please give it a try.

Alex

while alex may have sourced the route of your problem with the above post, the g3 iBook's are running out of steam thesedaysd...especially on Live4. I have a g3 iBook as well and its not much use for office stuff let alone high end audio....

hope you sort it out

I'm running medium sized Digital Performer sets quite happily on my G3 900 iBook - and I've less RAM than meta - so I'd disagree with the 'running out of steam' comment, although it's not very good for softsynths....

but Digital Performer is not live, live is known to use more CPU than most other hosts...

hey Alex,

it looks like this beta would theoretically solve my problem...

but since it won't run past march 8th, it wouldn't be very much use on the 12th - unless of course the official 4.1.1 release is out by then...

any ideas?

have you guys forgot that clock for clock live performs as well on G3s as it does G4s?

his ibook is perfectly capable. as capable as a G4 933mhz.

thanks, adam - my trusty ibook usually works a charm...

anyway, this bug i'm experiencing pretty much renders ableton totally useless; if the official 4.1.1 isn't out until next week and the current beta expires on march 8, i'm basically screwed...

is there any possibility of acquiring a 4.1.1b4 beta that would last until march 14? i tried reinstalling live 3, but the live 4.1 files don't seem to be backwards-compatible...

any solution on ableton's part would be above and beyond the call of duty - and legendarily appreciated by yours truly...

Hi folks,

in the past we managed to release a new beta or final version when a previous beta version expires.
I see no reason why we should change it this time. :)

if ableton doesn't deliver the goods, you can always set back the date on your computer. well, just in case if... :)

got to jump in,
still got my g3 700mhz... still making it, even with my backup g4 ibook, albeit with less ram than the g3. i say, clean the system up. set the energy settings, get as much ram as you can. use only the vst's you really need. If you still have a problem, start saving. . ..
