Great new videos exploring M4L @ darwingrosse.blogspot

Post by jon_moore » Sun Dec 13, 2009 5:41 pm

These video's are great introductions to M4L with each exploring either a 'Play' or 'Program' aspect of M4L.

The Loop Shifter video alone does a really nice job of explaining what on the surface looks like an intimidating little beast!

Thanks, jon, for the link-up and kind words. I guess it is a telling tale that I work on this stuff all week, then spend my weekends making videos about it!

I'm hoping to improve the quality in the near future, but I hope these are helpful in the meantime.

agreed, Loop Shifter is a LOT more powerful than it appears on the surface. if you have a short attention span skip to about 20 minutes into the video to see the real phreak show.

I totally agree, after seing the video, I went into the loop shifter and it's absolutely amazing. I am going to spend hours to make presets for manipulating live loops. Incredible tool.

It's an amazing little device huh! The unsung hero of the 'Big Three' I'd say...

I was pretty happy with that little performance - live on the keyboard, no sequencing. Pretty fun stuff - and that's just one piece of one of the algorithms. I'm hoping people will crack open the javascript algorithm engine and write some new ones for me to try out!

Well, I enjoy doing these sorts of videos. I'm open for any "PLAY"-oriented videos that people might suggest, but I'm just not sure what to do next...

Ideas, please?

I am personnaly much more interested in programming tutorials. There is a real lack of them. And it appears that you are such a great teacher. I also like the rythm of the tutorials, I have been able to reproduce it while watching.

On the 'Play" side, an exploration of the Pluggo conversions (hopefully unearthing the hidden gold). Think this will help because they ship without any support documentation and some of them may appear a tad intimidating to M4L initiates.

But my personal preference would be an exploration of the included building blocks with some examples of how to use them to devise new creations (in much the same way that you convert the 'simple seq' midi device into a ring mod audio effect in the last set of videos).

maybe show people how to tweak the preset content that comes with Live. show people that they don't have to write patches from the ground up, they can use what they already have as a jumping off point.

or show some basic simple utilitarian uses for max.

for me, I still don't understand the Live API enough to explore it myself, I just use what others have created and go from there. same with javascript but that's just another language, I can do that. the API is a concept that I don't fully get. it seems more documentation is in the works though.

keep it simple, accessible and of course, fun. I've very much appreciated what you've done so far, thanks.

Hey Tone, where are you finding devices? Berklee? Max4live.info? Maxobjects.com? I'm interested in midi devices basically. Unfortunately been so busy I haven't had time to dig into M4L yet :(
