I bought that song... along with the rest of the album in 1993. It is still one of the most influential ground breaking style bending albums I've ever heard and is a testament to how fed up people can be and should be with lies spawned by their own government.8O wrote:Right, so, there's a song with the lyrics "Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me." and thanks to facebook you're all going out to buy it...![]()
"Fuck you I won't do what you tell me" x 5 may serve to get peoples attention but that was what Rage Against the Machine was trying to do with that song and the rest of the album in the first place. Its not very often that musicians come out and truly try to change the thinking of people, shake them, and wake them up to things ignored, forgotten or swept under the rug.
Music is a vehicle not just entertainment. They taught my young ass that lesson well back in 93.
They are, by far, one of my biggest musical influences.
I hope they fucking kill it!

I'm not buying it, second year this has happened and again it's something on Sony BMG and actually gives X Factor a reason to exist.

I really don't think there is a conspiracy theory behind this. Someone thought that song would be a funny choice to base this campaign around because of the lyrics. Perhaps the campaign organisers were aware of an incident when this song was originally released: the Radio One DJ doing the chart run-down mistakenly played the un-edited version in the middle of the day.
But beyond that, I really don't think there is anything behind this. Someone thought it would be a laugh, and now people are trying to attach some kind of cultural significance to it. The UK charts became meaningless years ago. Would it be amusing if the X-Factor single wasn't number one? Yes. Would it actually make any difference to the X-Factor's future? No.
I like RATM's music, as it goes. But I recall going to rock gigs in the 90's and the audience was mainly white, middle-class kids, rebelling in a safe environment. RATM are no more subversive or anti-authority than many other bands of their ilk.
X-Factor... It's good Saturday night, family TV. What more high-brow show would you have on in it's place? Would you force ITV to follow a Reithian, public-service broadcasting remit?
Music is about entertainment for a lot of people. I was at an arty audio/visual event in Portsmouth on Saturday. It was fantastic, but I was talking to two women from Botswana who thought it was bizarre. Their view was that music is for dancing; painting, sculpture, and literature is 'art'. If the masses want to waste their time on X-Factor then let them. I certainly enjoy the early X-Factor rounds where people make fools of themselves. A lot of people have got more important things to worry about in life than whether their taste in music is acceptable to the audio cognoscenti.
The money spent on the RATM single would be better spent being donated straight to charity. The X-Factor CD single goes on sale today and will no doubt start to make immediate gains on the RATM sales.

My god. Thinking about it, this is the precise way to motivate a bunch of lazy tards (xfactor watchers) to go out and buy the x factor single. No doubt this years sales will "overtake last year in a record breaking christmas sales dash". This is either a bit of fun or an incredibly brilliant piece of manipulation. Who knows which, but also who cares.

According to UK singles chart rules it has to cost 40p or more to qualify apparently.

Congratulations, that pretty much describes most shows outside of those in small community specific night clubs.Leon Tricker wrote:I like RATM's music, as it goes. But I recall going to rock gigs in the 90's and the audience was mainly white, middle-class kids, rebelling in a safe environment.
I think rebellious, white middle class kids buy a large portion of tickets in general.
Love em or hate em there are a shit load of "successful" artists (of multiple genres) today that wouldn't have a pot to piss in if it wasn't for those very kids...

personaly i think its a prety shit and pointless idea, the sheeple who are buying the RATM track are no better than the sheeple who watch/buy Xfactor.
so what some kid might not get the nunber 1 slot, but it wont make any difference to how many copies sell.

That's right. It does describe most shows. Which is why it is laughable when middle-class kids pretend they are rebelling, be it with RATM or any other band. I don't understand your point.H20nly wrote:Congratulations, that pretty much describes most shows outside of those in small community specific night clubs.Leon Tricker wrote:I like RATM's music, as it goes. I think this is a fun idea and I'd also think it awesome that whoever should look back on all the charts, tucked in there @ 2009 would be RATM. Fun. Slightly political. Cheap.
One band is of the people by the people, the other choice is manufactured for the people in the appearance of "choice". It's not like I'm saying that is some new contrast, in fact it's as old as money and art, but I love that rage and it's always fun to rock the boat!
