I absolutely and totally agree. Although, for the average small label like my own, sending promos individually could be a full time job :)

I think this system makes it an easy choice for the DJ too though... We're not asking for full reviews and essays. If they want the track, they'll leave feedback, and they get the track as an incentive/reward to giving feedback.

But with regards to building relationships, this is by far one of the most important things for any musician to do. Even on a smaller scale (although probs a shitty example), my responses to this post. I'm not one for posting some spammy bollocks and then running a mile when people start responding (positively or negatively).

So,

you offer management of an existing mailing list, rather than a dj promotion service.

i.e. what i would pay you the money for is to mail my stuff out to x number of djs that play, say techno and house. Kinda what like power and white noise did back in the day but digital.

Do I have the wrong and of the stick? i have to have the emails addresses already, correct?

If so, can't I just do this on Soundcloud?

Not busting your balls here, just trying to understand how this would work/. . .
I slipped into a daze, whilst I was there I heard the most startling music, it was at once familiar and alien, reassuring and unsettling.

ok, yep,

seems i was right.

Tell ya what, i'd do this and pay a bit if you coud save me the problem of getting the emails / contacts in the first place. . .

There are only a couple of companies that I know of that do this and I am sure there is a market for it, new labels, unsigned looking to create some hype etc.. . .

bit of work on your end but then a better service offering for the market.

And be one of the other 000s of unknowns on soundcloud?

If you want to get noticed then you generally have to do something to get noticed. Web sites are not the answer unless you happen to get lucky (which does happen - as I found out :))
Nothing to see here - move along!

I see what you're saying, but you send your soundcloud link or whatever to your list of big DJs and tell me how many respond leaving you feedback. :)

I hear what you're saying about providing the list, but IMO I'd then have to start vetting the music myself as I couldn't just keep sending countless amounts of dross to big DJs. There are other companies who do this and I'd rather let them deal with that.

Music is subjective, and I wouldn't want someone to lose out on a "hit" just because I didn't like it :)

hmm,
there are labels that cheer big times for the "download for r.hawtin" feedback.
dj feedback is just another marketing mechanism important only for djs with no taste and (perhaps) shop owners.

Possibly, but if it got me more exposure, and raked in sales at the same time, I don't think I'd complain :)

absolutely wrong. support from 'superstar' DJs is a killer sales tool (to the music-buying DJ market). there's many times I've noticed a track because of the DJs playing it.

there's a lot of services out there that the same sort of thing. I'm part of a promo service called ZipDJ http://www.zipdj.com that has lots of international promo dance music, I just have to fill out the feedback for the labels
