Wow & Flutter Problems?

Hey. So far I'm rather impressed with what Ableton can do. I've been working on a dj set up, and am quite excited with what Ableton allows. My problem is that I am having trouble getting tracks off of vinyl warped right. Warping digital downloads usually isn't much fuss, and they always beatmatch dead on beat, and stay on. But vinyl for some reason seems to never be on just right. Is there really no way around the wow & flutter on a turntable? Is it just a better idea to spin what's on vinyl on a turntable and what's digital in ableton. I just can't stand the tracks being even a little off.

Anyone else encounter similar problems and any tips on what I should be doing or looking out for?

BTW, I've only been using ableton as a dj tool for a couple weeks, so this very well could be a simple problem that I'm not addressing due to inexperience.

I experienced similar problems with my first vinyl rips and here is my advice.

1. Good Decks! I've got 1210's - make sure that the quartz lock is on (pitch at 0 and light on), this should remove the problem of the platter speeding up and slowing down (unless your lock is bust!)

2. Good soundcard
3. Good recording software
4. Right recording environment

One problem I had with my first setup was that very occasionally there would be brief glitches in the recording(causing problems later when trying to warp), probably caused by the soundcard, or by the recording software not being able to keep up, or by another application like a virus scanner interrupting things.

So you want to shut down all uncesserary programs, disconnect from the internet / network before recording.

I now use a Firewire Audiophile and Soundforge to record and don'y have any problems.

Even after all this, some records seem to be warped or badly mastered or pressed as I have a couple (out of about 50) which need to be warped in small chunks rather than most tracks which can be done in one go. The record has to be really bad so for the timing to drift out audibly over say a 4 or 8 bar phrase.

heard this somewhere else: make sure your turntable is level. like in 'horizontal'. (don't know the english name for the tool to use... the metal strip with glass in the middle and airbubble)
