new to live, midi keyboard question

Post by bhc303 » Wed Dec 23, 2009 11:45 pm

I can only play notes on clips while the record armed light is on (button under solo on clip bar)

can I set it up to play without the button armed?

How?

suite 8

novation sl 25 mk1

Thanks in advance!

cheers

Click the rectangle labled "In" under the word "Monitor" in the channel strip.

well the obvious answer here is to only have "in" selected for one track at a time.

but... if you're looking for something akin to "select a track, play its instrument", then I'm not sure there's a way to do that in Live (wiser heads, chime in, as I'd love to learn if there is). Assuming I'm right, there are a few workarounds:

1. Set different instruments to receive on different MIDI channels (i.e. not global), if your controller has a way to quickly change the keyboard's / global MIDI channel (not familiar with Novation controllers; not sure how easy this would be).

2. Set some of those buttons on that SL to turn on/off record arming or toggle monitor mode for the tracks.

Hope that helps some.

edit: apparently there is a way to do that with Automap on the Novation controllers, or by using the SL as a control surface instead of just a MIDI in. Like I said, little experience with Novation controllers, so not sure how one would go about doing so.

Can I ask why? New clips will not be recorded in Session view unless you fire a clip slot on a record enabled track.

So you could just record enable multiple tracks and play at will yet only record on one of them for example.
