anyone using midi din sync devices with live?
anyone using midi din sync devices with live?
hey all,
I am new to live & tyring to get my studio set up again.
I have a Kenton pro solo mk2 hooked up to the out port (midi) of my motu ultralite going to input on my Kenton controlling midi to cv/gate & midi to din sync.
I have the cv/gate out going into my sh-101, I use to be able to control my sh-101 from my midi keyboard in logic...
how can i do this in live?
i have messed around in the sync preferences in the live's preference section.
when you have cv/gate inputs connected on the 101 the keyboard is disabled and will only respond to notes drawn in in live, however I could play my novation midi keyboard and play notes on the 101 as well as drawing notes and the 101 would respond when using logic.
the din sync is working nicely keeping my 303 m& 606 synced up, so what am I missing in the routing to play the 101 and draw notes to trigger the synth?
cheers

Re: anyone using midi din sync devices with live?
big booty bump for this and a question, can you only play your novation, what about playing the 101 itself does that work or do you have to use a seperate controller with the kenton?
Re: anyone using midi din sync devices with live?
you can play the 101 by it self on the 101 keyboard and record in real time into live, but you have to have the cv/gate jacks unplugged in order to do this as the 101 keyboard is disabled when the cv/gate jacks are plugged in, if the jacks are unplugged the 101 will not respond to any drawn in hits from live.can you only play your novation, what about playing the 101 itself does that work or do you have to use a separate controller with the Kenton?
So if your a mad keyboardist you would be fine with this set up, but I am not
the Kenton only supports one midi input so the only easy way around this is to use a DAW with a usb midi controller that way you get the best of every way...
hope this is of some help
there should be a way around this as logic and cubase were able to maximize the use of my pre midi gear nicely in my current studio environment.
cheers

Re: anyone using midi din sync devices with live?
well I don't know the gear you have, but after reading your post a couple of times I don't see why it would not be a simple routing issue??
in preferences, have 'track' lit under the motu midi output
make sure the monitor is off or auto+unarmed on the track you are trying to use in live
'sync' should not matter as far as playing the 101, but i guess you are using it for the other machines
?? i'm just chiming in since nobody else is

Re: anyone using midi din sync devices with live?
I have a kenton pro 2000ii controlling 4 monosynths, plus a novation bass station controlling one diy monosynth. In Live I have no troubles selecting and using any synth, just record activate(or monitor) the track sending midi to the kenton. Just match up all the midi channels between live&the kenton, and make sure you are either arming the track or monitoring it. It should be as simple as that.
Otherwise you should check your pro-solo to make sure it is sending the proper gate signal, because it may be sending a yamaha gate type and it will not be triggering your adsr in the 101.
As far as din sync goes, in Live's preferences activate the sync out on the midi port going to the kenton and it should work fine.

Re: anyone using midi din sync devices with live?
I've got a related midi sync question. I'm using an older macbookpro and a motu utlralight MK2 with an MPC 5000 and an Elektron Machinedrum. I send midi sync out of live as a master, and the to sequencers slave to it. I make my drum beat on the hardware, it sounds in sync with the clips I have playing in live. But when I record one of my drumbeats into live from the hardware its off. My buffer size is at 256. Doesn't live account for that buffer when syncing up channels its recording? I'm not chaining millions of midi devices here, so I can't imagine the midi latency is more then 10ms. I'm only syncing with midi clock, live is not sending midi note on or off or cc data. It sounds in sync before I track it into live. How do you guys record your live clock synced midi hardware back into live? I have a virus TI2, and because it uses the vst plugin/usb mode, I don't have this problem at all. It tracks on beat.
Re: anyone using midi din sync devices with live?
live takes the freedom to place recordings somewhere.. i think they expect the users to loop everything anyway and put new warpmarkers on the one...
you should refuse to see that as a feature and file a bug report

Re: anyone using midi din sync devices with live?
So what you are saying is, live re-warps the loop I record... and that is why it sounds different? So what I do now is record a two bar loop (for example) for 6 bars. In a scene in a session view. Then I zoom in really close and cut it where the two bar loop start and stop points should be. This is A LOT of extra work though. It should be synced already? There is no way everybody else does this? What method do professional producers use to go between hardware and software?

Re: anyone using midi din sync devices with live?
Any of you lot tried motu Volta. Might be a good solution. I'm getting a copy tomorrow.
Re: anyone using midi din sync devices with live?
No I have not tried Volta. Let me know how it works.
Re: anyone using midi din sync devices with live?
could not figure out it for the life of me... reset the kenton and bam she works like she use to!
thanks all
now I got sort out my monomachine...
