midi mapping problem

Post by opus40 » Thu Dec 24, 2009 8:02 pm

I've spent about an hour trying to figure this out. I'm very confused.
I'm trying to assign my nano kontrol to control the volume, panning, soloing, and muting of each track. that's 36 tracks total, if you factor in the scene changing. the problem is, when I assign a control in the mixer, it's for that ONE SPECIFIC TRACK ONLY. If I delete the track my assignment is gone, rather than the track after it becoming the track that receives the data from the channel.
Is what I'm trying to do possible?

Might want to look at this:

Maybe I'm misunderstanding you, though. You want one set of controls to alter the channel strip params on ALL the tracks simultaneously...?

not quite. I'm trying to have it so that if I set parameters for say, track 6 pan, that the mapping isn't going to disappear if I delete that track and create a new track 6. Ableton makes all my mappings track specific, and I'm trying to make settings that will be the default in any project. I was able to do this in Logic.

Hm. Doesn't Live have a similar option to other DAWs where the project it starts up with is just a file, or you can set the startup file to be something other than the default?

Doesn't help you retroactively, I know, but going forward you could set a default project with controls mapped as you like. I don't think the "map disappearing when you delete a track" thing is going to change, however. Unfortunately.

search for info on default template and you should find all the info you need to set up live to load up pre configured to any way you want.

other than that, the kind of reasigning of midi control your wanting is taken care of with the APC40 or Launchpad.

thanks to everybody for the help. changing my default project seems like the most likely solution for me at this point. Also, I went ahead and ordered the Evolution UC-33e, which is supported by Ableton, so hopefully I'll find a place for both controllers.
