Re: OT: Good Film
I'm interested to hear what you think about it.
+1 Clive Barker. Was just thinking about re-reading Imajica earlier today...or Great and Secret Show. Then again I just got Pynchon's new book, so...

Did you like any of Lars Von Triers other movies?Tarekith wrote:I did not 'get' Anti-Christ at all. A few good scenes, but overall I did not get all the praise this one received.
Breaking the Waves?
The Idiots?
Zentropa?
Dancer in the Dark?
People either like his movies or they don't, mostly I do, but the Idiots was pretty banal IMO.

You've read the Books of Blood right? Great stuff, just awesome!ethios4 wrote:I'm interested to hear what you think about it.

Another bonus to renting the DVD of Midnight Meat Train is an almost 30 minute documentary on Clive Barkers paintings thrown in the extra scenes, pretty cool stuff, he talks a lot about the creative process and how he approaches it, worth it for that alone IMO.
Re: OT: Good Film
haven't read books of blood, but that looks really good. great writer. I think I'll be picking that up for some bedside reading. Gonna queue up Midnight Meat Train too. Thx!

Yeah I like his longer books, but I really like his short stories, nice and concise weirdness!ethios4 wrote:haven't read books of blood, but that looks really good. great writer. I think I'll be picking that up for some bedside reading. Gonna queue up Midnight Meat Train too. Thx!
All over the map, from fantasy to hardcore horror, guess that's not surprising.
There's a convincing story about how the hands want to secede from body and plot out how to do it while the body is asleep.
Midnight Meat Train and Hellraiser are both short stories from that series etc.
Crazy good stuff.
Re: OT: Good Film
The Conversation, with Gene Hackman.
Nr. 1 on my list to watch is Fitzcarraldo.

Re: OT: Good Film
Loved both of those for different reasons. Trier stopped using flashy FX and edits in movies after Zentropa and started the Dogme movement in film:Tarekith wrote: I loved Dancer In The Dark, Zentropa was only a so so one for me too though. Haven't seen the others.

Breaking the Waves, Dancer in the Dark, and Zentropa are all great IMO.
I can understand why someone wouldn't care for Zentropa, but I love the themes in the movie: innocent stupidity wandering into a vastly complicated beast of a situation. Moral capitulation and the human cost, plus an acknowledgment in the movie that war and soldiers, plus business interests combine to make even the 'good' side ethically suspect. I think the director thought that the FX and editing made the subject not stand out as much and spurred him into abandoning that sort of filmmaking, but with such touchy subjects it added at least a little lightness I though.

+1 Let the Right One In. Great film, sometimes called the best vampire movie ever made, certainly one of the most unique. Just one small part of it that I thought was interesting was the 70's historical detail.
+1 Dr. Strangelove. My favorite comedy ever.
Irreversible- brilliant film, but I agree, DO NOT watch this with a woman. Only movie I've ever had to look away from the screen. Remember hearing something about it being in part a reaction to the French anti-pornography laws that were about to go into effect, as a statement on how that would effect art and people seeing things in a shocking way that forces them to think about things they don't want to think about.
My favorite Dogma film was The Celebration.
