Launchpad programming, LED feedback - Confusion!

Post by rdevries » Sat Dec 26, 2009 11:27 pm

this has been discussed in several threads but I cannot get my head around programming my Launchpad. Please enlighten me!
I understand that you can either use the LP in Live-mode with the sessionmode and mixermode having LEDfeedback, or use automap-programming to assign the buttons to any Live-control but in this case there is limited LED-feedback (only dimred, brightred or off, but if I map a trackactivatorbutton with automap it lights up dim- and bright-amber when pushed).
I read that to use the LP with automap you should not select the LP as a controlsurface in Live or switch between the Live- and automap-mode by pressing session+user1+user2+arrowdown.
However I would like to use the sessionmode and mixermode in Live-mode and, at the same time, assign the buttons in user1 and user2 mode to other controls in Live (record, mute, trackactivator, tracklaunch, trackstop etc. and controls in plugins). Furthermore I would like to see the buttons in user1 and 2 to also have LED-feedback like it seems possible with the trackactivatorbutton in user2.
Can someone say if all the above is correct and if the programming I want is possible?

thanks!
Rene

my $0.02... just waking up here, so be easy on me.

if you want to PROGRAM it, do you mean with max4Live? I've been doing that but you didn't mention m4L so I won't rant there.

session view - just use the arrow keys to navigate the Live set to launch clips.or use the buttons along the side to launch scenes.

mixer view - read the text along the right side to see what they do. pretty straightforward.

User1 - make up a drum rack to play with User 1. I made my own so the columns going to left to right are kick, snare, open hi hat, closed hi hat, kick, snare, open hi hat, closed hi hat for a total of 64 drum sounds. let's say that's on track one. THEN make another midi track that takes input from track 1 PRE EFFECTS and sends its output to the Launch Pad. now when you play the drum hits from the LP the LED on the LP shines. when you play midi into the drum rack, the LEDs play automatically.

User2 - enable REMOTE OM in midi preferences, now you can assign buttons as controls on the LP. hit a control in Live, hold down a button on the LP, tap another one, now you have a column of LEDs as a controller. this is what I've done the least of with the LP.

I haven't messed with automap with it. if someone doesn't help with that I'll try it later.

hth.

thanks Tonedeft, I don't have max4live. I managed to do all you described but as I said I want to customize for example user2 to assign buttons to recordarm and have the same LEDfeedback for this control as in mixermode (dimred=disabled, brightred=enabled), the same for trackactivator (dimamber, brightamber) and in the same user2 assign buttons to tracklaunch, trackstop etc with corresponding LEDfeedback (green=playing track, off or red=stopped track).
I tried this with both Live's midilearn and automap, the former doesn't give me LEDfeedback and the latter only works for the trackactivator (dimamber and brightamber) other functions are just dimred or brightred. Furthermore I understand that it is not possible to use the LP's Livemode and the automapmode at the same time (you switch between them by holding session+user1+user2, then arrowdown).
The reason for my quest is that ,in mixerview ,I have no use for the 4 toprows of buttons and I want to assign them to other controls and still have LEDfeedback, or, this is what I focussed on, customize user2mode: lower 4 rows to control recordarm, mute solo, trackactivator and top 4 rows to control tracklaunch, trackstop and some other controls. All buttons should have LEDfeedback cause this is the really nice thing about the LP.

If you want the template to remain global you will have to program the automap editor.
Building up different templates for your launchpad manually.
I struggled for a while then went back to programming using reason through the session veiw as you would ableton.
I got so frustated I contacted novation support on it as there is amasingly still nothing helpful anywhere on this device.
I don't know if it helps you much here as we are after different things from launchpad but here's what they sent back.
Hi James,

Thanks for your e-mail.

The easiest way to use the Launchpad with Live would be to use Automap. Here you can use it in one of two ways:

1) With the reason Automap client.

To set up this add "Novation Automap control" as a control surface in Reason's preferences. Once this is done, from the USER browser group in Automap a Reason client will appear allowing access to the parameters of the currently selected device in reason.

2) With a MIDI client in Automap.

MIDI clients are accessible from the USER browser group in Automap. Each client corresponds to a MIDI channel on the Automap MIDI port. To add a channel select Settings>MIDI channel and tick the channel you wish to use. You can then edit the mapping to send various MIDI messages.

Set reason to respond to port "Automap MIDI" and you can use the Launchpad as a MIDI controller through Automap.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

It did for me.
