What are these called, and can they work with Ableton?

Post by clamber » Thu Dec 31, 2009 3:36 am

I just found a new band I really really like and instead of a drummer it seems like they have some sort of like physical sampler.
Here's the video:

A few weeks ago when I ventured into the world of electronic music and bought Ableton Live 8 as well as some tutorials and 3rd party sounds, I told myself I was going to keep it software only to help keep the costs down. But it looks like one of these could be really really useful.

So Im just wondering if you guys could point me in the right direction to learn more about these(what are they called, where can I acquire one, are they compatible with Live 8, and would you recommend one?)

Thanks,
Coby

You mean a drum machine?

That one looks like an Akai MPC something or other.

It basically does the same things Ableton can do. Ableton can do more if you ask me but that's neither here nor there but I do believe drum machines were here way before Ableton.

Look on Craigslist there are tons of MPC up there for pretty cheap. If you want to do this in Ableton just get a M-Audio Trigger Finger (also very cheap on craigslist) Other things to look into are Korg PadKontrol and on a slightly different note the Akai APC40 and the Monome.

Hope that helps.

if you're looking for something to use along with the computer always as in when you play you will still have your computer there and use it, then get maschine by native instruments, if you are going to use it in conjunction with live in the studio but when you go out live you plan to leave the computer behind then get an mpc-1000 or mpc- 2500 (my pref)

Second +1 for Maschine. Total integration within Live, yet with a physical playing surface. Way better than the MPC i used to have.

Oh and +1 for The XX. I think its great that they have a unique sound. I'm not really into rnb, but when they combine it with early Cure and Young Marble Giants atmospherics, I dig it. My wife and I always joke that they sound like a Nick Lache and Jessica Simpson duet over the Cure's Seventeen Seconds... 8O

cause I'm looking to rob such a grave. :)
